lawrocket 3 #3 May 23, 2006 I've got my son in swimming lessons. I took him to a session yesterday, and he hates it. kelel01 1 #4 May 23, 2006 My parents chucked me off of a diving board when I was a baby. It was supposed to acclimate me to the water or something. Of course, now I'm terrified of being underwater. Nice work.

skymama 37 #6 May 23, 2006 QuoteI've got my son in swimming lessons. I took him to a session yesterday, and he hates it. I can remember my younger brother going through swimming lessons when he was about 4 at the house across the street from ours. He screamed and screamed and always managed to escape from the pool, out the screen door and would run across the street to our house! He finally got used to it and enjoyed it enough to compete in the NCAA championships for Clemson. I'm sure your son will get used to it soon enough too. JENNR8R 0 #7 May 23, 2006 I've been doing deep-water aerobics for years with flotation devices. When it came time for water training for my 'B' license I discovered that I had a phobia about getting my head under water. It took me six weeks of forcing myself to put my head under water before I was over it enough to try the water training again. I passed, but I still don't like it.What do you call a beautiful, sunny day that comes after two cloudy, rainy ones? -- Monday.

inzite 0 #9 May 23, 2006 I come from Florida myself, so everybody I grew up with knew how to swim. I don't believe I met a soul the entire time I lived in the US who didn't know how to swim. I just took a trip to Antalya, Turkey with a friend, only to find out she'd never set foot in deep water before - only in city pools no more than a meter deep. She was absolutely terrified of the water, and while she managed to force herself to wade in and swim a bit, the idea of jumping from the dock nearby was too much. As a Floridian, it's amazing to me that most of the world really doesn't know how to swim, and is generally nervous in deep-water situations. I've never given swimming a second thought, but even perfectly logical, level-headed individuals who have never been in deep water before generally harbor a sizeable phobia. The next one that comes along is gonna have lessons much younger than Conor - he's almost two, and the oldest in his class by far. He is only almost two...I think that he is plenty young for swimming lessons. Maybe you can slowly help to acclimate him to being in the water, somehow. Don't force it, if he's not ready, yet. You'll know when he is ready for this. For now, let him be a young child and enjoy his childhood...with or without swimming. I used to live in New York (in the city) as a young child. As soon as we moved to SoCal and had our own pool in our backyard (the summer when I turned 6), my brothers and I all took swimming/diving lessons. I remember seeing kids from 1-5 years old being so scared of being in the water. My brothers (ages 7 and 2) and I (age 6) all took to it very quickly, especially myself and my older brother. My younger brother at 2 yrs. had to be eased into it. We all LOVED being in the water, though. From then on, I spent all summer every summer, mostly in the pool with my brothers. I still love swimming, especially in the ocean.
