The Sinking of the Oriskany

Recommended Posts

That's gonna be a cool dive site some day... although I guess it'll be a bit deep for us casual vacation divers.

I flew from the Oriskany...I was there when the fire on October the 26, 1966 tore the ship apart and 44 people lost their lives. The sinking of this ship was not the greatest day in my life. I really didn't want it to happen, altho I knew the day would come when this mighty warship would lose it's life. I still have some of the clippings from the Atlanta Journal/Constitution, detailing the fire that gutted the forward section. Unfortunately, they are too big for this site to accept them but if anyone wants to read them, send me a pm with your e-mail addy and I'll send them to you.

Cloudseeker,
John bit the big one from the Forrestal...Not the Oriskany. His A-4e was on the deck and took a direct hit from a Zuni missle that was accidently fired while sitting on the deck of the Forrestal. That's how the Forrestal caught fire in 1967. The fire onboard the Oriskany took place on October 26, 1966. If he had been downed from the O Boat, he wouldn't have been onboard the Forrestal in '67.

I saw an interveiw with him on CNN talking about the ship and how he felt about it being sunk and used to create a reef. I thought he said the Oriskany, but I could be wrong. It sure looks like the same ship that CNN showed.

Edit:John was transferred to the Oriskany after he escaped the fire of the Forrestal. He was assigned to the VA-163 Saints squadron and its parent Air Wing 16 which operated off the Oriskany and took more losses than any other fighter wing. He was shot down exactly one year to the day after the Oriskany fire-10/26/67

I was transferred before the Saints came back on board the O boat in 67. VA-163 had been assigned to the Oriskany for the first two deployments to WesPac - 65 and 66 - and that I know for a fact. Now, whether he was assigned after that date I don't know. I assumed that he was hit from the Forrestal. I don't know. However, I know that the Saints were on the ship in 66 when the Oriskany caught fire. I also know that after she burned, he was transferred to the Forrestal and his bird was the one that took the hit from the loose rocket that burned the Forrestal. After that, I lost track of Ltjg. McCain when I left the O Boat.

once it really turns into an artificial reef it'll be *really* cool.

I think that's part of the reason they put it in deep water. Can't you just see some idiot diver entering the ship and getting lost?! :S
But just imagine the size of the fish that thing can shelter... wow!
