Why do people burn their "bridges"?

Sir Bedevere: There are ways of telling whether she is a witch.
Peasant 1: Are there? Oh well, tell us.
Sir Bedevere: Tell me. What do you do with witches?
Peasant 1: Burn them.
Sir Bedevere: And what do you burn, apart from witches?
Peasant 1: More witches.
Peasant 2: Wood.
Sir Bedevere: Good. Now, why do witches burn?
Peasant 3: ...because they're made of... wood?
Sir Bedevere: Good. So how do you tell whether she is made of wood?
Peasant 1: Build a bridge out of her.
Sir Bedevere: But can you not also build bridges out of stone?
Peasant 1: Oh yeah.
Sir Bedevere: Does wood sink in water?
Peasant 1: No, no, it floats!... It floats! Throw her into the pond!
Sir Bedevere: No, no. What else floats in water?
Peasant 1: Bread.
Peasant 2: Apples.
Peasant 3: Very small rocks.
Peasant 1: Cider.
Peasant 2: Gravy.
Peasant 3: Cherries.
Peasant 1: Mud.
Peasant 2: Churches.
Peasant 3: Lead! Lead!
King Arthur: A Duck.
Sir Bedevere: ...Exactly. So, logically...
Peasant 1: If she weighed the same as a duck... she's made of wood.
Sir Bedevere: And therefore...
Peasant 2: ...A witch!

It's not a lack of integrity. It might be a lack of maturity. It's certainly a lack of respect. Showing one's disrespect is often appropriate, although the method in which it's done is a personal choice rooted in personal values. What's good for you isn't necessarily good for someone else.

Burning bridges (besides thinning the witch population) is a way to show one's disrespect when they otherwise might not have been able to.

In a world full of people, only some want to fly... isn't that crazy! --Seal

I guess the great Monty Python offers too strong an answer to your problem.

Honestly though, I think it's the combination of a couple of things:

Lack of foresight
Making impulse reactions based on emotions

It makes them feel good for the moment, and they often don't stop to think about how what they're doing could hurt them in the long run. The way they feel also helps to cloak that little feeling people get that tells them "wait, this might bite me in the ass later."

Just sayin.

I am FAR more likely to be screwed with than Billy:D

Everybody loves him---ALWAYS. He's Mr. Likeable and I'm the witch he puts up with:P (OK, if I give myself a *little* credit, his friends & family adore me:$, but I'm DEFINITELY not the queen to His Royal Easy-goingness:D. That's why we work so well, I think. I ALWAYS know what I like/what I want and he can never decide:P)

But, back to the subject. I'm so sorry, hunny. It sucks when people screw with the ones you love & care about b/c they might as well be screwing with you, too[:/]

Hang in there. Karma's a bitch;)

Actually someone is screwing with my SO. An employee, I am sure Billy can relate. No big life threatening action, just kinda putting Bob in an awkward position. Grrrrrr.

Bobbi

People burn their bridges when they believe there is nothing further to gain from those with whom they're cutting a connection.

Sometimes it's because they're young, stupid and angry.

Others times, it's because they're just wholly self-centered, and they believe that others are useless unless they have an immediate use for them.

And finally, sometimes bridges need to be burned, because sometimes those with whom one is connected are toxic. But most intelligent adults realize that it's better to go out quietly than with a bang.

Good luck, Bobbie. If you need someone beat up, let me know.

Why do people burn their "bridges"?

a) Because they didn't think before they acted (the #1 reason)

b) Because they don't want the others crossing it once they left.

I'm not fond of my current job and some (not all) of the people I work with. I know I'm out of there in the fall of this year as I'll be leaving the current city I'm living in and going to another one I know I'll like better. But I'll likely need a job reference for my next job, so I need to keep my trap shut and tolerate the crap at my current place. So no bridges will be burned by this camper. Of course if I didn't need the job reference, my dynamite and charges would be getting good usage. ;)

Some bridges need burning. Others are a mistake to burn. I think it's highly dependent upon the bridge.

I recently burned a bridge with an acquaintance I found out was a liar and a coward who physically assaults women. I have no regrets.

I burned another bridge a couple of years ago that I do regret, and am trying to rebuild. That one was a mistake on both of our parts.

So many variables come into play there with the proverbial bridge.

Hope you make the right decision for you.

WoW! A response from the elusive RL!! I am proud and honored!! Seriously.:)
In this situation the man is not young and stupid, just stupid. I truly believe he thinks the grass is greener where he wants to go....traveling 90 miles one way...that in itself is a retarded move at this point in time with gas prices.

I can handle what ever may come my way, but if you want to tag team, I'm up for that!!!;)

burning bridges can be a good laugh :D a change to fuck somebody over when you've had to be nice to them while you needed something from them (like a job or something)

its nice to get one over somebody, nice to fuck somebody off if you dont like them :)
