sunshine 2 #1 July 27, 2005 On August 22, i start SCUBA lessons. I'm so excited. I met with my instructor today to pay my deposit, buy my "new diver packet of goodies", and just get some general information. I already warned him all my gear must be PINK!! Yay, i'm so excited. Anyone got anything to tell me about this scuba diving stuff? ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug! TomAiello 26 #3 July 27, 2005 QuoteAnyone got anything to tell me about this scuba diving stuff? Don't do it the same day as skydiving. I haven't been scuba diving in years. I started with my Dad when I was in high school, and was pretty into it in college. I think all my gear is in a shed at my parents house, now. Which makes sense, I guess, because they live 20 minutes from the ocean, and I live 12 hours from the ocean.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
Girlfalldown 0 #4 July 28, 2005 NO! Don't do it Sunshine! You might choke on an eel! -------------- (Do not, I repeat DO NOT, take my posts seriously.)

sunshine 2 #6 July 28, 2005 QuoteDon't do it the same day as skydiving. Already discussed that with my instructor. He actually said you can scuba after skydiving, but not skydive for up to 24 hours after scuba. Just to be safe, i won't do both in the same day anyway. I think i remember what its like to be a whuffo asking so many questions about something i'm interested in, but know nothing about. Yay!! ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug!
sunshine 2 #7 July 28, 2005 QuoteWhere are you going to be diving? For starters, in the pool at a local university. Then the class takes a trip to a lake about 20 miles away. After i finally get certified, i'm planning on going to more scenic places. Illinois isn't much on underwater scenery i don't think... If anyone is a current scuba diver, please please please PM me or add me to your IM list. I have tons of questions and dont' wanna drive my instructor nuts by calling him every day before class starts. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug! Frenchy68 0 #11 July 28, 2005 QuoteIllinois isn't much on underwater scenery i don't think... An unfounded myth! The great lakes have some of the best preserved coral reefs. Poking Jimmy Hoffa's bloated belly with a stick is also an underwater crowd favourite. VanillaSkyGirl 6 #12 July 28, 2005 How wonderful! You're going to love it, Sunny girl. My final dive for PADI certification was one of the most beautiful days that I've ever seen. My class went to Anacapa Island on a diving boat, and we were able to swim with the sea lions there. The water was so clear and blue, and despite the cold (it's ok, we also had a hot tub), it was one of the most magical days that I've ever had. Sunny girl, I hope that you have a similar experience and fall in love with scuba diving. It's always nice to have a new adventure. Have fun!

bob.dino 1 #14 July 28, 2005 PADI: Paperwork and Diving Inbetween. I've about 20 scubadives. 'Tis nice, but doesn't really compare to skydiving for me. Anyone want to buy a Suunto Stinger? Only dived twice!

I didn't really research anything about it, so when talking to the guy today, he told me what PADI is. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug! PsychoBob 0 #18 July 28, 2005 You'll love it. Like skydiving, It's very relaxing once you get used to the gear and beiing underwater. If you get a chance go down to Pennekamp SP, Key Largo in the FL. Keys. Great diving and lots of fish. vid666 0 #19 July 28, 2005 QuotePADI is the best, IMO you must of done 'em all .. here's a joke I heard from 2 of my friends who are both instructors - guess with who ? A diveboat has a few different groups of students/instructors on it. All of a sudden it starts to sink : NAUI instructor says - "put on your gear, inflate your BC, stay above water and just wait for my instructions" YMCA insturctor says - "put on your gear, inflate your BC, stay above water and slowly start swimming towards the shore" PADI instructors says - "20 more dollars ladies and gents - now's it's a WRECK DIVE" I thought that was funny... I got YMCA cert a in 2000. Didn't dive as much as I wanted to, the OH quarries are just small and far from me.. Did Myrtle Beach Turtle Valley ( Hawaii ) Key West ( regular and wrech dives ) Mexico ( Playa del Carmen ) Red sea ( Eilat, Israel ) bunch of COLD Ohio quarries Lake Erie ( back home )
happythoughts 0 #20 July 28, 2005 The main difference between scuba diving and skydiving is that when you run out of air while scuba diving, you can go back up and get more. Attached is a pic of some Eagle Rays that swam by me last October. They are about 5-6 ft wingtip to wingtip. Underwater, things look bigger. When they were about 200 ft past me, a third came scooting by.
Zenister 0 #21 July 28, 2005 got my SSI ratings in College but havent done much of anything with them since.. I really enjoyed Diving but once i wasnt living in FL it was harder to get out.. and i cant afford (the time) for two expensive sports... but the things you will see and experience are simply amazing.... one day when i give up working for a living i'm going to get back into it...____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. gravitational 0 #22 July 28, 2005 You've got one of the best instructors in the area so you'll be good. Call or IM me with your questions and I should be able to help you out. There are a couple decent places within a relative diving distance from you that have some interesting things. Mermet Springs in Southern IL. has some decent freshwater diving. You've got my number...call me.------ Michael
