Speeding up a Sabre 210 opening

Recommended Posts

Word on measuring a PD slider. Fold the slider in half. Pull tight at the fold and measure there. If you measure at the edge with the reinforcing tape, your measurements will be off. A rigger that measured mine didn't know this and I bought a replacement slider because mine was "small" compared to "standard". When I received the new one and it was the exact same size as my existing, I was a bit dissatisfied with my rigger's lack of knowledge.>:(

That may be ZigZagM, but I will take that over a 100 or 200 foot opening anyday :P

I do understand the desire to not jump canopies that fell like you just hit the ground when they open... That be as it may... I also don't understand the trend towards the opposite, being taken to the extreme, where some of the "shit hot", "cool" canopies "kids" today "gotta have" that open into a streamer that eventually clears.

Have you ever jumped a Spectre?

Yes, I've jumped a Spectre.

I have been told by several vidiots that they routinely take up to a grand to open, sometimes more... :S

I wouldn't always smile at that... kinda takes away some options if your down and dirty.

Well, there are some secrets us riggers are not allowed to divulge to the general public... ;)... but its not like we're endowed with every tid-bit of knowledge about all canopies, rigs, etc. when we get our rigger's ticket.

I've known the proper way to measure a PD slider, as you describe, but I didn't know that until I had reason to ask PD and I learned.

When I got my rigger's ticket, I was told by an ol' grey hair master rigger that's probably forgotten more about sport skydiving gear than ten of us put together will ever know, that a rigger's ticket is a license to learn, don't start thinking you know everything now, keep asking and learning. My words to what I think he meant, in part, was don't let the fact that you're now a "rigger" stop you from asking questions because you're afraid folks will be disappointed in you since you're a "rigger".

Very wise words indeed! This thinking would also apply to skydiving as a whole, you never will know it all and you have to always keep learning!

I decided to go step by step through PD's manual for the sabre in case the rigger who showed me the packing procedure missed a fine detail.

"Sabres are designed for a slow-to-medium speed opening when packed as described in the P.D. manual - with each side of the nose rolled four complete turns towards the center. Do not tuck the nose into the center cells. The new airfoil design causes the center cells to form a pocket that can hold the rolls there during opening. Additionally, tucking the end cells into
the center cells will result in unreliable opening times, with some very long snivels. Repeat: Do not do this."

It would seem that although I got the 4 turns right I missed the part about not tucking the nose in. Oops! Looks like the snivels are being caused by the packing. Will correct that this weekend and report back how well it goes.

Okay agreed...I certainly wasnt complaining a couple weeks ago when I had to take it low on a 10 way. Threw at 2300 and saddled out at 1900....:o

G. MINIMUM OPENING ALTITUDES [E]
Minimum container opening altitudes above the ground
for skydivers are:
1. Tandem jumps–4,500 feet AGL
2. All students and A-license holders–3,000 feet AGL
3. B-license holders–2,500 feet AGL
4. C- and D-license holders–2,000 feet AGL

*cough*

:D

Okay, okay, not that a D-License makes gravity not care... I've been know to "pull low for safety" sometimes myself... :$...

Are those the rules for the US? If I were a D and if I tossed out at 2000 the last opening I had would have been open at 800. The rules in the frozen northland are 200' higher. Not my idea of fun. Depending on how many jumps I get this weekend I'll try not tucking the nose in and see how it opens.

I'm in the habit of watching the deployment and there didn't seem to be any trouble with the PC. It is fairly new and didn't seem to have any trouble pulling the bag up and open. From there that square mess of flapping stuff seemed to just sit there for a long time before the slider started to descend.

Don't do this, it is a dangerous habit to get into. Yes you need to confirm that the canopy has opened properly but if you spend the entire opening looking up you won't see the canopy collision you are just about to have.

Also, that is also a very bad position for your head and neck during opening shock (if you get an opening shock).

Other than that, I just echo the earlier comment that it is hard to believe you want a Saber to open faster.
