ntacfreefly 0 #1 June 1, 2006 Katie and I just got a new puppy and we were wondering (from dz dog owners) what the best way to go about training her to be around a dz safely and without being a nuesance would be? Any tips would be appreciated. DanG 1 #4 June 1, 2006 Hey! That's not nice. I'm having Keeper bite you the next time we bring him out. And in answer to the first poster. Bring him/her to the DZ on a leash regularly, and show them what is right and wrong. They need to be acclimated to the environment, or they'll end up like our dogs who freak out and misbehave when we bring them out. - Dan G
SkydiveStMarys 0 #5 June 1, 2006 You need to get the dog used to people first and foremost. Having a dog that could/would bite someone is not good at all. I kept my two dogs that were at the DZ in my office or out on a lead for awhile so they could get used to the crowds. When in the packing area, they were never off their leash when 'chutes were out....when the plane was running they were never off the leash. Just a few thoughts. ntacfreefly 0 #6 June 1, 2006 Yeah - she's great with people (and other dogs). We had planned to bring her out and leash her during the day but we want to be sure we're doing the best thing we can. Thanks for the tips people, keep them coming - except u weegee To the mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders. ~ Lao-Tzu It's all good, they're my brothers ~ Mariann Kramer

SkydiveStMarys 0 #8 June 1, 2006 One great thing that I had going for me is that my office window was right by loading...so she could see people getting on the plane and she was also used to the engine noise. The one thing I suggest is... do not take for granted that she won't go by the plane when running and loading jumpers...there was a dog (at the airport owned by a pilot) that was "trained", supposedly, not to go near the plane and got its nosed whacked by the propeller. One hard lesson to learn for doggie. BobbiA miracle is not defined by an event. A miracle is defined by gratitude.
Icon134 0 #9 June 1, 2006 well... I generally keep Karma Kenneled or Tethered in a cool spot with lots of water during jumping hours and regularly walked her giving her the chance to go to the bathroom... unfortunately there isn't really a great way to teach a dog when it's a good time to walk about the hanger vs when its a bad time while jumping is going on... I do agree with bobbi that it is crucial to well sociallize the dog both with other dogs and with lots of people. Also it may be a year to two years before you can realistically let the dog off lead and not expect him/her to wander too far from you... in the evenings when I have karma at a dropzone... I'll sometimes let her wander but I generally like to keep her w/in earshot of me... good luck Ian... ScottLivin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... yardhippie 0 #11 June 1, 2006 Ive had Dutchess out to the DZ a few times. shes a good one cuz all she wants is to lay there and get attention. she used to go EVERYWHERE with me (work included) so she got used to lots of people coming up to her. Problem is now shes old and her hips hurt her, and she doesnt like to play much, so when another dog jumps on her it hurts, and she responds as any dog would. So now we just keep her at home my advice while shes a puppy keep her leased until she follows commands (even while youre not in the room) sit, stay, come, etc. She should also be able to distinguish unseen boundries. for example our dog is not allowed in the kitchen, and unless she overly excited (doggie treats) she never breaks that boundry. Same with the front door, we can leave it open and go in and out and she will not unless told its "ok". Lots of interaction with different people and animals should help too. skinnyshrek 0 #20 June 1, 2006 a friend of mine had a german sheppard that would walk over the lines no shit. He said the training was everytime the dog would walk over he would yank the lines up. After a while the dof became familiar with this and tiptoed never touched any lines.
