I've worked in a "Nursing Home" for 6 years...the closest any of them has come to having sex are the two sweet little ladies who room together and frequently are found naked in bed together the next morning. I'm not saying that it never happens anywhere, but the number of quality Long Term Care(LTC) facilities is much higher than anyone gives credit for. I'm very, very proud of where I work. Then again, I know what to look for in a quality LTC. I'm just sayin'......."running rampant" is a strong description.edited to add: OK so no one said "running rampant"....damn those voices in my head. I'm just saying that this is ONE WAY for elderly people to originally acquire an STD or HIV. elderly abuse may not occur at YOUR facility, but it DOES happen. I did emergency psychiatric work for 6 years and a fair share of the crises I responded to were at nursing homes that could no longer manage an acute patient. In more than one instance, after a little digging, turns out the patient was "acute" b/c she was being molested. obviously, other routes of infection occur, such as the fact that some elderly patients were promiscuous prior to becoming patients of a particular facility and have now "spread the love." And I did actually say that I know it goes on some places. It's just that people have a fear of abuse in nursing homes, and most people think it's much more rampant than it truly is. I deal every day with family members who can no longer take care of Mom or Dad and are feeling terrible guilt about having them come to live at a "nursing home". There's just so much stigma, much of it well founded, especially from many many years ago when facilities weren't regulated. My concern is adding to the stress and guilt that centers around this issue. There are, I'm sure, abuses occurring. I'm just saying it's not inevitable, and there are many things to look for when choosing a home to ensure that Mom or Dad is cared for with loving, compassionate hands.\ Whew! Hands tired now.
