Adrenaline fixes from work

Recommended Posts

I had a trial this morning. Sure, it was only a small type trial, about 3 hours and not before a jury, but it's still a trial.

There is quite an adrenaline rush that comes from trials. It's much like it was when I used to gig - the thrill was not just in the performance but in the stage fright.

There's adrenaline that comes from other hearings, like that which I had this afternoon. I get little bursts of adrenaline from finding solutions to problems. Sometimes, like today, I get big ones. Really nailing an opposing counsel in something is also a personal favorite - especially if the opposing counsel has been less than genial.

I get a steady adrenaline fix with my job. Lawyering can actually be a lot of fun. Maybe it's why I don't NEED skydiving like I did a few years ago. Why I don't NEED to gig anymore.

I can imagine firefighters get a heck of an adrenaline rush at times. ER docs and surgeons seem like they'd get it.

Anybody else get an adrenaline fix from their jobs?

Yeah, my spreadsheets really turn my crank.[:/]

Course, getting beat up by the CFO over an analysis he disagrees with can be exciting.

It's weird - I get a kick outta legal writing. Kinda like, "I wonder if they'll buy it?" I can be a sneaky SOB. My wife comes to me and says, "I have no idea how to handle this. Can you help? (aka, "It's your problem now, hon)." THat's the stuff I love.

A couple of times the court has tried to kick back a filing because they hadn't seen anything like it before? I like coming up with weird stuff that hasn't been seen. Certain judges seem to like it, too. Believe it or not, plenty of them like new stuff.

That's the kind of writing that is fun--the kind where you need to sell someone on an idea, but it can't be overtly persuasive writing. Occasionally I am asked to write a proposal and it gives me the opportunity to put in subtle bias and slanted facts and I get to tap dance all over the line between absolute truth and "putting your best foot forward". I love the subtleties of that kind of writing!

I definitely get an adrenaline boost from my job. It's not the in your face, "screw you opposing council" kind of fix, it's more like the "you came to me as a last resort and I worked my ass off and solved your problem" kind of fix, but I definitely get a high out of fixing things for people.

When I was working I always got a rush when we turned the communications system on and everything tested out perfectly. Every test passed increased the rush and the customer's smile put the icing on it.
My reality and yours are quite different.

I spend most of my day fixing ppl's computer problems. Sometimes I get a good laugh over what I go fix. Usually it's a loose cable, xp being moody, or someone locked out of their account.

Guy called me once to fix his printer, he'd unplugged it to make coffee :o. I turned another guy's monitor on :S. Both of these guy's are nuclear-scientists, Dr types (seriously).

I don't know I'd call it an adrenaline rush...but it's definitely a sense of satisfaction!!

I got a serious 3 minute rush last week when there was a bad baby that didn't want to come out the way that I would like!!! That got my heart beat up more than trying to kick out 4-5 twists!

Mostly OB is 98% thinking and planning and then 2% of "OH SHIT!". Gynecology is more like 99.9% thinking and planning and then 0.1% of adrenaline.

I love it though... so it's all good!

I really enjoy solving puzzles and fixing things, but I wouldn't call it a rush.

Occasionally I get to see some unusual/cool aircraft that are usually only found at airshows. That's always fun.

Test flights to see if we fixed the plane properly can be fun.

About the only adrenaline rush in this job comes when I have to observe or adjust something on an engine while it's running. Did you know that once you get within two or three feet, a spinning propeller is almost completely invisible? Watch your step!

I really don't enjoy the adrenaline fixes at work, I would prefer to have my fix outside work hours.

My work fixes are times when the network turns into a notwork, the phone starts ringing constantly, and a bunch of people are really, really pissed because there programs won't work, cause the server seems to think it's on an island all by itself. I really don't enjoy that.

Or one of the PC's at the end of the lines, which count and print varying messages on the boxes decides to quite counting and printing. Sometimes that's more of a heartache, than a adrenaline fix since if I can't fix it reasonably fast, say 10-15 minutes, a bunch of people are going to take a "walk" until I fix the problem child. And the "kind" owner doesn't pay for walks.

I enjoy skydiving because of the fun, excitement, maybe even the adrenaline. Or maybe it's that I can't answer the freaking cell phone when I am in the plane, or under a canopy. Maybe that's why I tend to take off weekdays whenever possible, and work a day on the weekend.

I am not sure I enjoy the fix as much as I enjoy getting out of work and home, and having fun.

I got a good rush this morning when I pulled a gun off a patients bed...then got a nice little brush fire...then another couple of ambulance calls...then a transformer that blew. you know what...I really don't get a rush anymore. now it's more of a paranoia about getting sued by some lawyer for the way I treated or didn't treat a patient or how we fought or didn't fight a fire right or wrong.

but in the end. being a firefighter/paramedic is the worlds best job.:)
