This is the thing that drives me crazy about these stores: The people that work there and most of the shoppers are so fucking ugly!!! They're supposed to be consuming allegedly healthy foods and they look like leppers. And they seem to embrace their ugliness. They compound it by not washing or combing their hair and they wear clothes that look like they have been rejected by the homeless.

QuoteIn my area, we don't have the actual chain stores 'Whole Foods Market' or 'Trader Joe's', but rather independent food coops. I buy my Spirutein from them. Most of their stuff is very good, but pricey. However, if I wanted sand for oatmeal, I'd buy a big bag from Home Depot.

Yowza! Easy, cowboy

We don't have "Whole Foods" or "Trader Joe's" either, but we have (as previously mentioned) a "Fresh Market" which I love. It's NOT AT ALL as you described. Actually, I always joke to my hunny we stick out like sore thumbs b/c everyone in there looks like a member of the big, rich beachside country club we have here---complete with the sweater tied around the neck

But, I LOVE that place and they have the best orchids (ironically for the lowest price) in town!

I find the Whole Foods crowd (*especially* here in Seattle) to be overly pretentious and annoying. Not everyone, of course, but there's a huge contingent of self-righteous crunchies and foodies who can get really irritating and believe that paying three times as much for everything is a badge of honor.
I'm very fortunate in that there's a lot of great options (farmer's markets, Trader Joe's, Uwajimaya - a HUGE Asian market, local supermarket chains, etc.) for getting good quality fresh produce and other foods that your local Safeway doesn't carry without having to deal with the Whole Foods attitude.
