the only time my (1/2) lab "escapes" or tries to escape is when I accidently leave my gate open... :o:D

and then she comes right back when I call her... B|;)

but if its a male dog... (especially if he's not fixed...) that would explain a lot... male dogs tend to roam more then female dogs...

No, Sapphire is a girl-dog, and as sweet as can be, but she's got lawn gnomes helping her escape or something. How can a being with no opposable thumbs undo a clasp at her own neck? TWICE??

Rumor has it that she communes with the local cows from time to time, so maybe they're in collusion with her somehow.

I had a 20" tall beagle that had wander lust so badly that she would ignore a shock collar that had double prongs, no delay, maximum shock... She would ignore this while climbing a four-foot chain link fence. Her neck would be hairless and oozing from the damage that the shocks would do to her. I had to end up staking her in order to contain her. She managed to escape from that several times too.

What made this especially difficult was the fact that she was considered unadoptable by Beagle Rescue because of a seizure disorder she had. If I couldn't contain her, she was a goner.

All of my neighbors were trained in doggy retrieval.

Dogs tend to get into mischief when they are bored. Are there any cats, squirrels, etc around, that may maybe driving her crazy too.

Bobbi

Being that her residence is in a rather rural and somewhat wooded area, I think that's a distinct possibility. But she seems to have an affinity for other animals. Maybe the squirrels are helping her escape. :D

Out of the two pure bred labs I have back home, only one is smart enough to run on her own. The other will only run if she sees one of the others, and then its more of seeing where they are going. The smarter one, will go outside and act normal, then just kind of walk behind the house and bolt. The worst part of it is she feels the need to run up to and jump up at the window of any car who slows down for her.

But if you want to hear a smart dog, you should see this adopted stray we have. He is 1/2 Rhodesian Ridgeback 1/2 German shepard, and when he was a stray he got it in his head that he must be hidden when he craps. So when we lived at our old house with a fenced in yard, we found out he use to charge the fence, roll at the base of it, and just bend the fence out and over him. Then when he was done with his business in the vacant lot next to us, he would do the same thing and just come back in. It was the damnedest thing to watch! :S

Labs are diggers. I had a pure bred and good god, I could have started a golf course with all the holes she has dug...any who....add a few squirrels to the mix with a sprinkle of boredom and there ya go...escape artist!! We extended the fence three inches into the ground...it helps...you could use chicken wire or some other metal type fencing. Also my Lab was terrified of thunder and lightening...she busted thru a door to get inside...just another thought.

I didn't think it was to hard to understand. :P

Seriously. I have a beagle that is just over a year old. I've resorted to putting a stake into the ground with a 30 ft. cord attached so she can run and play but not escape.

And hell, if she escapes she's insanely hard to catch! It must be a breed thing... they have the hunting/sniffing thing...

Luckily, she's not really a howler. :P

I have a 2 year old male beagle that I can let out with no leash or stake and he has never left the yard. He's afraid of his own shadow, which helps, I'm sure.

Train it to do what? Escape? Talk about stupid pet tricks!

"Look no matter how I try to contain my dog; it ALWAYS finds a way out! ... Yeah, I taught it that..."

You might as well have its own kennel set up at the local SPCA!

I guess it was training. When he was very young, I let him out with no leash, as I knew he couldn't get away. Then, as he got bigger, I put him on a 'run' made from a pulley on a clothesline. Now, I can just open the door, and he seems to assume that he is on the 'run' so he doesn't bother trying to get away.

It's like training a dog to walk at your heel. Once they are trained, you can drop the leash and they assume that you are still holding it.

My younger sister took up a different method that achieved the same results. She got the lab as a puppy, and everytime it would go very slowly investigating something she didnt know, my sister would run up from behind and scare the dog. She did this so often that the dog is scared shitless of EVERYTHING! I have seen a grasshopper chase that dog up the driveway! Its pathetic!

Oh God. My dog isn't THAT bad! And he is getting better with his fears as he gets older.

Most beagles get into trouble because they are following their nose. Once they get a scent it is there instince to follow it forever. Maybe stopping rabbits from getting into the yard is the answer.

Yeah, this dog is still pretty young [5 years old i think] so she has a lot of growing up to do. All i can hope for is the day that we dont have to take her outside to meet new people for fear of her peeing in the house!

my first dog had a habit of escaping i blamed everyone for not closing the door properly 2 of them, that is until i spotted him jump up on his rear legs and pull the handle down with his fronts then walk back till it was just open enough to get his nose out, sneaky little shit that he was :D:D:D
