cutaway cable timing - Collins lanyard

Recommended Posts

So, I was thinking the other day (uh oh! :D) about cutaway cable timing.

Conventional wisdom dictates that we trim cables so that the NON-rsl side releases first.
That way, if somebody only cuts away 1 riser, the RSL will not deploy the reserve into a still-attached main.

The recent Chicagoland incident got me thinking. It was speculated that the student cut away only a single riser, then deployed the reserve.
If a rig was equipped with a Collin's lanyard - would it not make sense to cut away the RSL side first (or even just at the same time).
This way, if the jumper only cuts away 1 riser before deploying the reserve, the Coliins lanyard would cut away the other riser before the reserve has a chance to inflate.
This, of course, assumes the gear owner (or maintainer) is head's up enough to correctly route the cutaway cable....

Comments?

For reference, from the Vector 3 manual:
Quote

A) Rigs without RSL: each yellow cable should
extend about 6 inches (15.2 cm) past the
housing ending.
B) Rigs with RSL: the right (RSL) side yellow
cable should extend 7½ inches (19.1 cm) past
the housing ending. The left (non RSL) side
should extend 5½ inches (14 cm) past the
housing ending.

Interesting how RWS/UPT/CPs says to leave a two inch difference (with the RSL side releasing last) while most other manufaturers (i.e. Rigging Innovations) say that one inch difference is enough???

Its up on which side the RSL is connected. If on the right you need these 5 cm because of the left housing compression , if on the left 2 cm are enought.

What need is there to change a system that works? If you were to change the cables and then a jumper after cleaning their cables, or changing canopies misroutes their cable to NOT include the Collin's Lanyard (VERY easy to do) then where does that leave the situation?

You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
