Tornado sirens are going off... I can barely hear them

Recommended Posts

The most expensive tornado warning system in the US, and they can't even make it loud enough to eliminate the 2 minutes it takes to hear it and think "Oh that's a tornado siren"

Weak!

Actually, what I've determined to be the issue is that the new style sirens are omni-directional and this negates doppler effect. With the old style rotating sirens, you got the doppler effect and it was a lot more noticeable. I've never understood why they went to these new sirens. They need to change frequency or something that keeps them from blending in to the environmental noise.

: People bitched about the noise with the old ones, probably...

Then they'll call and bitch about the really loud train, even though they don't live near the tracks...

The irony being that they are supposed to be heard. It's always a problem until the time comes when it saves someone's life. :S

We have at least one for every square mile in the Moore/OKC area and even then it still takes a moment to actually hear the thing.

Yeah, 'cause Dave walks up with a beer in his hand.

The irony is the last time we had a tornado in this area I was at the DZ drinking beer. We had shut down due to a storm coming in, so there we stood outside when the sky started to turn green. Oops, went and put my truck under a carport on the airport. Just incase it only hailed. :D

A goodly number of jumpers didn't run home, we just sat around drinking beer watching the weather. Yup, skydivers aren't always the smartest.
