General Question: Cost of gear?

Hi all. I recently did my first jump and am looking to get licensed. Obviously, money is a factor (I'm a starving grad student)...so I'll wait until I get some cash saved up.

I definitely am going to wait a LONG time (like, after getting licensed and doing a bunch of jumps) before buying my own gear, but I was just curious what the average gear cost is, starting from scratch? I need to figure out if this is something economically feasible for me to do in the near future.
