Muffin 0 #1 June 12, 2006 I dont post much but...well, actually, this is my beer post...the rest were all replies...anyway, I couldnt let this go. I think the use of sicktime in the workplace needs to be the subject of recurrency training...I had to sit out jumping this weekend and burn a sick day home with the plague that the princess down the hall brought in. She didnt want to use her sick time unless she was "really really sick." Is it me? Or does it seem only fair that since she brought the bug in, I should use her sick time? Or am I just being sick and nasty?
Nightingale 0 #2 June 12, 2006 Talk to your supervisor. Maybe he can have a meeting reminding everyone that it's better for productivity if one person stays home sick rather than coming in and getting ten other people sick. Where I used to work, they had a policy that you didn't get any sick time at all until you were off probation (6 months). So, if you got sick anytime in the first six months, you either didn't get paid that day or you dragged yourself to the office. We had one guy, one of the clerks, who could not afford to miss work. He missed work, he couldn't pay his rent. So, he came in sick. A few days later, there were about thirteen people out. So, in not wanting to give this poor guy one sick day, the company then lost the work of more than ten times that one.

tigra 0 #4 June 12, 2006 You're being sick and nasty. Not that you don't have a point, BUT there's often a fine line between work ethic and the risk of infecting the entire office. The fact is, the corporate world rewards us for toughing it out and penalizes us for calling in sick. Not to mention, in almost every job I've had, if I did call in sick, I did so knowing that my co-workers would be dumped on and/or my work wouldn't get done and my customers would suffer as a result. In either case, I'd have a huge mess to deal with when I returned to work. That's a pretty good incentive to drag my ass in even if I'm coughing and sneezing, and generally feeling miserable. I guess that makes me one of those "I have to be really really sick" to stay home people- sorry! Besides, the way flu viruses work, aren't you infected and contagious before you start to feel sick, and still contagious after you feel much better? What company would let you take 7-10 days off to get over a cold?

McBeth 0 #9 June 12, 2006 I feel the urge to say Suck it up cupcake Or maybe Suck it up muffin. But honestly I don't come into work when I'm sick. I can do work from home though, so I can still be somewhat productive.

tigra 0 #12 June 12, 2006 BTW- If she's down the hall, how exactly did she get you sick? Did she lick your phone, sneeze into your coffee or breath all over you? Are you sure she brought the bug in? It does suck to be sick, so I hope you're feeling better soon even if I am sort of giving you a hard time!

She made sure to come in to my office and spend a good 5 minutes talking about how she was sick but came in anyway...but I've turned over a new leaf...I'm not staying home sick and bitter...I've come back to work today and feel it only fair to pass the torch...or...the ebola on to the next coworker... Somehow suck and muffin in the same sentence is oddly arousing...you know...this coming to work with a fever thing is way underrated. Delirium gives everything a wonderful hazy sheen...
