I Quit . . .

Recommended Posts

I just can’t work two jobs and be the executrix of my mother’s estate any more. I came home from church yesterday and worked until midnight. I never even changed out of my church clothes until I went to bed, and I never did get to work on the estate. I'm burned out, and I'm not doing any of my duties efficiently.

The job that has to go is being the bookkeeper for the church. I’ve done that for over ten years and no one else has ever paid a bill or made a deposit. I’ve never resigned from a job before. Today is the pastor’s day off, so I don’t think I should tell him until tomorrow.

How should I tell him? How much notice should I give considering every invoice and bank statement goes to my house?

You're right... I never thought of that... This won't be a surprise. God already has my replacement picked out.

If you believe in a God with a master plan then it shouldnt be a problem at all :) :)

As the semi-unwilling bookeeper for a church (which now has almost no members, but some responsibilities, and a real estate note that will come in for a couple more years), boy do I sympathize with you. And I don't envy the minister finding someone else.

I'd call him ASAP and tell him when you have to quit. If you can do the absolutely essential for a couple of weeks while he looks for someone great. If you can't, tell him right away, so that he knows just how urgent it is.

And get started now writing a job description. You'd be astounded at how much easier that is to deal with than simply being helped through it and then left to remember what you watched someone else do...

Good luck -- you've done way more than your share. The only reason I got bookeeper was because the previous one went RV'ing full time. And he still reconciles the books. I just get no innate pleasure from making the columns all add up.

I'd never leave the church hanging. That's part of my reluctance. I know that training my replacement will just add to my workload. We have just started a building program. It's going to get worse before it gets better, and the thought of that is overwhelming. This could drag on for a LONG time...

That's a great suggestion. :)

When you start feeling resentful, that's a big clue it's time...if you continue to hang on, one day you're just going to blow up at someone, probably for something minor, and feel really bad.

I know you're worried that you're going to leave the church hanging, but you may be surprised to find that once the pastor knows you're outta there (by giving him a firm last-day date), that he gets a replacement pronto!

If you explain it to him like you did to us, he'll understand if he's any kind of pastor. If he doesn't, not your problem. It's his, he's the pastor.
