waltappel 1 #29 June 16, 2006 Quoteummm...holy shit.... I've always heard tell of women you'd have to coat in flour to find the wet spot but I never in my life thought I would actually see one.... As a nurse I had one far worse than that. There was a very large woman who was hospitalized with a huge fistula/absess right next to her vagina. With all the rolls of fat and inflamation it was pretty hard to tell which was which. Anyway, we were really short-handed and I got stuck with irrigating the abcess, which meant that I had to take a 60cc syringe (one of those really big ones!), fill it with sterile saline solution, and wash out the abcess/fistula. So not being able to tell for sure which was which was the big delimma. What do you do in a situation like that? "Pardon me ma'am, but I can't seem to figure out which of these gaping inflamed holes is your vagina and which is the abcess/fistula. Would you mind pointing them out to me?" Hell no--I've never been smart enough to ask!!!!. So I guessed. Thank goodness I guessed correctly. The fistula was so huge that it swallowed most of that syringe. I flushed it out a few times and then went on to my other patients. It was one of those times I was quite convinced that nurses do not get paid enough.
