boinky 0 #3 June 17, 2006 Actually, I thought hurrincanes were more devasting than what that chart showed. Maybe because it's just a simulation and not real life, it didn't SEEM as bad? NlghtJumper 0 #4 June 17, 2006 That is such an exageration! My house has been standing in FL since 88. Cat 3's MAYBE move a couple shingles. The biggest worry we have when hurricanes come thru is the nearby trees. They arnt that bad... FlyingJ 0 #5 June 18, 2006 Hurricanes can be just a picky as tornadoes in deciding which house gets spared and which house gets screwed. Last year I spent about 3.5 months on the road doing hurricane relief w/ my AmeriCorps team, primarily cutting trees off houses and tarping roofs, and it was amazing to see how house A might have lost an entire roof while house B was practically unscathed. The most extreme case of that I saw was one beachfront house standing fine and people living back in it two days after the storm while next door the entire house crumbled down onto the beach, completely gone. Not to belittle the damage done, but man what an amazing force weather can be. I never cease to be in awe. It was almost surreal last week being back running a Red Cross Shelter for people forced to evacuate for TS Alberto. It seems like last hurricane season just barely ended but here we are. While I would never hope for damage, etc., the opportunity to do additional work with my AmeriCorps team on hurricane relief is the whole reason I opted to volunteer for a second year. I don't think I've ever felt anything as wonderful as the thanks offered from people that you've been able to help make it through such tough times.Killing threads since 2004. NlghtJumper 0 #6 June 18, 2006 I know what you mean. When I was in AIT back from August to October in 04' a hurricane came thru the Alabama area and tore up some trees and what not really bad. So on that weekend a bunch of us volunteered and spent the whole weekend running around from house to house helping to cut and clear all the debris. Everyone was so grateful for helping out like we did. After going through something rough like a bad hurricane or what have you, sometimes all you need is just a little helping hand from your neighbor to help you start getting things back in order.
