this might help

Edit to add: the orientation of this picture is odd - consider the front of your computer as the bottom of this picture and it will probably line up once the cover is off

Please domn't just throw it in the trash. Take the circuit boards to a hazardous waste recycling center. There are some pretty nasty materials in very small ammounts in the boards and those centers are equiped to dispose of them. Lead can be present in some. There is also usually trace amounts of gold and other materials that they can dispose of. That goes for all the old batteries you have used, any circuit boards, etc.

are you worried about a homeless person taking your hard drive and finding personal info on it or something?

if so, just run a magnet erally well over every peice of hardware in the box, and you'll be covered. B|

Considering that there are already two high-strength rare-earth magnets already sitting next to the hard driver platters and heads, I don't think that's going to work.;)

Now, sometihing like an alternating current electro magnet (aka bulk eraser) may be a better bet.

Here's some interesting reading regarding securely erasing hard drives...

Im doin a dump run and theres a big ass pile of old computer stuff. Im pretty sure thats the correct way to dispose of em. As far as erasing the hard drive, well, no reason to toss all that personal info out into the world. Not paranoid, just rather not offer my crap to all them opportunists running around;)

thanks

There's bunches of stuff you could do... 1) remove the hd and apply sufficient force to physically destroy the drive itself (sledge hammers work nicely), 2) drop said hd in a bucket of muratic acid 3) run a program that repeatedly rewrites the drive over and over again 4) toss hd into the next bonfire at the dz...

Additionally, instead of just dumping the computer, you could donate the computer so it could be refurbished (or vandalized for parts in other computers) that are given to schools, churches, or other worthy causes so that improvished kids have access to computers...

If you choose to remove the hd, than that's easy enough to do and all you need is a screwdriver (prolly phillips head). Open the case and look for a ribbon cable approx 2" wide and really flat. There's a black or gray connector (usually at the end) that's plugged into a metal box that has no 'user interface' (which means you can't access it from outside the computer case, ie you can't put a disc in it). Pull out the ribbon cable, unplug the other wire connector (the power supply), remove the screws, and pull the hd out.

Tossing computers in the dump is not the correct way to dispose of them. Taking them to a hazardous waste center is. The lead and other really nasty chemicals will break down and try to seep into the local soil and water supplies in a dump.

Im under the (mistaken?) impression that when stuff like that is seperated from the main garbage dump area that it is done so that it can be disposed of properly. Hmm, guess I can find out when I go there. The girlfriend has already suggested I donate the monitor and keyboard and crap, I'll just see if they want the rest (minus the hard drive).
