GogglesnTeeth 6 #1 June 20, 2006 Ok, not sure if any of you have heard of this, or can hear this in the first place. There is a new "ring tone" out there for cell phones that kids in high school are using because only younger people can hear this frequency. Here is a link to the news story...... http://www.eschoolnews.com/news/showStoryRSS.cfm?ArticleID=6350 Here is a link to the tone as an MP3. http://download.npr.org/anon.npr-mp3/atc/atc_teenbuzz.mp3 Can anyone else hear it? I can if I turn my speakers up loud, but most of the people I work with don't say anything. Goggles and Teeth "You fall like a greased safe!!!"

gofast_ER 0 #4 June 20, 2006 intresting. I read the article. Um, I don't really understand the need for a ring tone that adults can't hear for a classroom setting. If you have visual contact with your phone you dont really need to hear the phone to know your getting a text message or call.I may not agree with what you have to say but i'll defend to the death your right to say it. yamtx73 0 #5 June 20, 2006 With my headphones on (no speakers) I can hear it... very high frequency tone... I doubt I'd hear it without the headphones...The only naturals in this sport shit thru feathers...
quade 4 #6 June 20, 2006 That's not even all that high a frequency. Just ran it through a frequency meter and got 15k. Well within "normal" hearing range for adults. My ears are totally shot from being a pilot, skydiver and pretty freekin' old and I can hear it just fine.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Cornholio 0 #10 June 20, 2006 I think that one is a different tone than the one the article is referring to, as I heard the one JT posted just fine with or without headphones. But the one that I found online last week I could just barely make out. Let me find it and link it and you tell me what freq it's at. Butthead: Whoa! Burritos for breakfast! Beavis: Yeah! Yeah! irisheyes 0 #11 June 20, 2006 I have no problem hearing it. But, it is quite annoying.
MF42 0 #12 June 20, 2006 Strange...last week the tone mostly blended into the constant ringing I hear anyway, but now I can hear it very clearly. Weird. My head must have changed keys or something. Matt
Cornholio 0 #13 June 20, 2006 Yeah, this is it: http://audio.cbsnews.com/2006/06/12/audio1701350.mp3 What freq is that one at? I can't hear a damn thing. Edit, actually if I play it in winamp, it sounds just like the other one. Maybe my hearing isn't as fucked as I thought. Butthead: Whoa! Burritos for breakfast! Beavis: Yeah! Yeah! shaiziel 0 #14 June 20, 2006 Students can't put the cell phone on a setting where there is vibration because that's noticeable to teachers. They can't have silence and no vibration if they want to be able to hear when they get a text message from their friends. So the idea is find a high frequency that is outside the spectrum of many adults' hearing and use that. EDIT: And they can't have their phone visible because teachers would take it away. Doesn't matter, it's all dumb.---------------------------------------- 6.8% - Almost there!

ntrprnr 0 #16 June 21, 2006 FYI, if you download it, it won't work on VZ phones - VZ phones recognize ring tones as a midi file - not as a .mid. So you're SOL if you're on VZ. skycat 0 #17 June 21, 2006 Why the hell are kids text messaging in class. School was easy for me and there was no way I could have text messaged and still payed full attention to the lecture. *note to self if I have kids I will monitor that text message shit and they will be in trouble if I find out they were doing it during class. Oh and I heard it this time, I couldn't on the 1st link, yikes, it makes my head hurt.Fly it like you stole it!
jeremy556 0 #18 June 21, 2006 WTF? Why not just use vibrate? That is 15khz which most anyone without severely damaged hearing is going to hear just fine (and be annoyed by).
MagicGuy 0 #19 June 21, 2006 That is really annoying. i can hear it with a fan and a TV going. What's the age limit.. I mean, how old is TOO old to hear it? I'm 20, btw..
tigra 0 #20 June 21, 2006 They are different. With my speakers turned way up, I could hear the other one. This one- just barely. Its like I can feel it more than hear it. Weird.

My ears are totally shot from being a pilot, skydiver and pretty freekin' old and I can hear it just fine. Ok, this is depressing. I can't hear a thing, even with the sound turned all the way up. Had to put the speaker right against my ear to even pick up a subtle vibration. Geeze, I -am- old and hearing impaired. Sigh....guess I should go take that hearing test now. ltdiver Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there are footprints on the moon
FallinWoman 1 #24 June 21, 2006 I can hear it if I turn up my speakers... As a teacher...I do not get the need for this. My kids do not get my attention when they receive a text message, but when they RESPOND. I can tell when they are texting...hands in purse, hands and eyes focussed on their bellies just below the level of the desk.... ~Anne I'm a Doll!!!!
