High frequency ring tone for your phone...

Recommended Posts

Ok, not sure if any of you have heard of this, or can hear this in the first place.
There is a new "ring tone" out there for cell phones that kids in high school are using because only younger people can hear this frequency.
Here is a link to the news story......

Here is a link to the tone as an MP3.

Can anyone else hear it? I can if I turn my speakers up loud, but most of the people I work with don't say anything. B|B|

holy FUCK THATS ANNOYING!!!
If I were a teacher and heard that I would be forced to kick someone in the nuts.

why don't they just use the "SILENT" option.

kids are getting dumber, i think.

Really, thats annoying

intresting. I read the article. Um, I don't really understand the need for a ring tone that adults can't hear for a classroom setting. If you have visual contact with your phone you dont really need to hear the phone to know your getting a text message or call.
I may not agree with what you have to say but i'll defend to the death your right to say it.

That's not even all that high a frequency. Just ran it through a frequency meter and got 15k. Well within "normal" hearing range for adults.

My ears are totally shot from being a pilot, skydiver and pretty freekin' old and I can hear it just fine.

I think that one is a different tone than the one the article is referring to, as I heard the one JT posted just fine with or without headphones. But the one that I found online last week I could just barely make out. Let me find it and link it and you tell me what freq it's at.

Yeah, this is it:

What freq is that one at? I can't hear a damn thing. [:/]

Edit, actually if I play it in winamp, it sounds just like the other one.
Maybe my hearing isn't as fucked as I thought. :D

Students can't put the cell phone on a setting where there is vibration because that's noticeable to teachers. They can't have silence and no vibration if they want to be able to hear when they get a text message from their friends. So the idea is find a high frequency that is outside the spectrum of many adults' hearing and use that.

EDIT: And they can't have their phone visible because teachers would take it away.

Doesn't matter, it's all dumb.

15k.
Exactly the same as the other one.

It MAY have more to do with your audio player / speaker system than your ears.

FYI, if you download it, it won't work on VZ phones - VZ phones recognize ring tones as a midi file - not as a .mid. So you're SOL if you're on VZ. Sorry...

Why the hell are kids text messaging in class. School was easy for me and there was no way I could have text messaged and still payed full attention to the lecture. :S

*note to self if I have kids I will monitor that text message shit and they will be in trouble if I find out they were doing it during class.

Oh and I heard it this time, I couldn't on the 1st link, yikes, it makes my head hurt.

They are different. With my speakers turned way up, I could hear the other one. This one- just barely. Its like I can feel it more than hear it.

Weird.

I know what you mean, and I'm still feeling like yacking several hours after hearing it. >:(

Ok, this is depressing. :| I can't hear a thing, even with the sound turned all the way up. Had to put the speaker right against my ear to even pick up a subtle vibration. [:/]

Geeze, I -am- old and hearing impaired. Sigh....guess I should go take that hearing test now. B|

I can hear it if I turn up my speakers...

As a teacher...I do not get the need for this. My kids do not get my attention when they receive a text message, but when they RESPOND. I can tell when they are texting...hands in purse, hands and eyes focussed on their bellies just below the level of the desk....
