wmw999 2,584 #55 June 21, 2006 Quit it today, so that you can honestly say that you're an ex-smoker when you turn 40. That way you're not hanging a whole lot on the day; instead, you're owning the day, and you can enjoy your birthday and be given shit by your friends without biting their heads off. sartre 0 #62 June 21, 2006 I went to a cadaver class a few years ago. The woman had been a life long smoker. We were able to take her various organs out and look at the cancer spots that had spread throughout her body. Her main impetus in donating her body was to help others resist or quit smoking. If there's anyplace around your home that you can view something like this, it may further motivate you to keep fighting the fight. Of course, it's not a good idea if you're squeamish. As they unzipped the body bag, the fellow beside me thought he was going to be sick, so he turned and ran for the door. Trouble was, he passed out as he reached it, falling into the door knob and knocking out 8 teeth. So you may want to do the buddy system if you think you might not be able to handle it. My parents have been 'trying to quit' on & off for over 20 years. My mom can't even walk up a set of stairs without oxygen. I'm thinking jumping out of a plane with a tank of liquid O2 strapped to you won't be too easy..... Better to break the habit now than after another 5, 10 years of smoking. Good luck!! sartre 0 #66 June 21, 2006 Quote Have you ever seen "Body Worlds" exhibit? Amazing! That would be a good one for someone wanting to see the effects of various abuses on one's organs. Honestly, though, I was bored at it. But I've studied the shit out of the human body, particularly musculature, & so much of the info was stuff I've already seen plenty of. I would still recommend it, however. Particularly for any students studying anatomy & physiology.

kirrz 0 #69 June 21, 2006 you know what.. whenever i have quit for a while (ie. over a month) and go back to have a ciggie, it's gross. i think when you smoke regularly, you become accustomed to the taste.. if you ever go back and have a ciggie a few months after you've quit, it will cement your plight because that first puff is gross and will gross you out. i'm quitting at the end of next week for good. i've tried so many times but living in a bloody college dorm & being able to get duty free cartons regularly really didn't help. Edit to add: good luck! and go you!!!
yoink 321 #70 June 21, 2006 Keep it up Liz! You can do it! when you get cravings, try doing something else that you don't associate with smoking. I never used to smoke on the phone, so I called all my mates and talked shit to them for the 5 or 10 minutes it took for that craving to pass... after a while, you'll get it less and less. Grabbing a shower or doing some exercise work well too. It's those little peaks of crraving that at the hard ones. Good luck!
weegegirl 2 #71 June 21, 2006 I'm off the wall with energy. It's too funny! I used to hate mornings and the last two days I have litterally JUMPED out of bed. So I feel great. Last night I was all sorts of neurotic, crawling out of my skin, with nic fits out the wazzooo. But, I can do this. YOU GUYS ROCK! The support is unbelievable. I honestly thought to myself at my worst moment yesterday - I can't smoke, I would be letting down EVERYONE! Thanks, guys! Awwweeee!
wmw999 2,584 #72 June 21, 2006 Not only would you let us down, but someone out there would probably kick your ass Your dad is proud of you. My ex-husband quit smoking just before he turned 30; the first couple of days were definitely the worst. Doing different things that took time and physical action (we painted the living room and wallpapered the dining room) really helped. So go make someone a sammich, woman Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it.
