New York City: How far fo you commute into NYC

Recommended Posts

Ok here's the deal. I got a job offer from an airline to work at JFK. Great pay and stuff but dint think it is still enough to get something that I would like in the city. How far do some people go to get something that is afforable around there. Or do some people live in another state and fly home every other week. Thats one of the options I am looking at. Is just getting a crash pad with a bunch of guys and split it. Any help here owuld be great.

JFK is pretty far into Queens and you could find something there for considerably less for what you'd find in Manhattan, if that is what you're asking. A lot of people work in Manhattan and go back to Queens where the rents are less and there are some nice places.~~April

Thats what I was looking at also. I want to move me and my fiance back to Colorado and just get a crach pad there with some other people. We have about 9 co-workers who I work with now that all got hired on and will be leaving soon to go up there. So I am thinking the crash pad would be cool. Just wondering where to get one. What about the Brooklyn area? Or Long Island or this distance getting a little far there. All of us would like to try to take the train to work everyday.

The part of Brooklyn that is closest to JFK is NOT where you want to be. You'd go to the end thats near Manhattan and high rents.

Try to find a place where you could split with roomies in Queens or Long Island.~~April

i'd say your best bet is queens, or even try to find something in jersey (its really not that far) - if you stay in manhattan or go to LI you will be paying a crap load more than necessary - and like it was stated above - the part of brooklyn that is closest to jfk is not the prime location of living - though other parts of bklyn are nice - theyre just a little more pricey - what range are you looking to spend for rent - cause that will help find you a place as well

And a lot do not. I want to work 4 days then go home. I am just wondering how far most people commute into the city.

Up to 2 hours each way is not unusual for a commute into the city. You don't mention the hours you will be working, which makes a big difference in regard to traffic. When it comes to NY commuting, it's not miles but rather time due to traffic. Kennedy is in a tough location for commuting. The Belt Pkwy sucks and the Van Wyck is not much better. Real Estate in NYC and Long Island is one of the most expensive in the country, but if you're willing to rent with 8 other people...it shouldn't be an issue. Time will also be an issue if you take public transportation during rush hour (s).
