900 sq. ft. apartment:S:S........if you're gonna skydive, you need to give up that yuppie lifestyle. I know a DZ in central FL. that has an air-conditioned bunkhouse for $2.00 @ night.B|B|

Do you have a ceiling fan over your bed? If so, try sleeping with that on and put the a/c back up to 78. During the day, keep all of your blinds closed. Also, check the filter on your unit and see if it needs changing. In the summer, the complex should be doing that once a month for you as regular maintenance.

If you can install a programmable thermostat, do so. It makes a huge difference, and it's a piece of cake to install. Then you can set it up to higher while you're gone, and have it kick back on about an hour before you come home.

During several summers spent in Houston with no A/C, I discovered that taking a cool or cold shower before bed, and having a fan cooling me made a huge difference; I was comfortable the vast majority of nights.

I'm very interested in conserving energy (and keeping my $$$ in my pocket where it belongs).

We had one of those free energy survey guys come out and tell us what we were doing right and what we could do to improve.

Things like changing the direction you close your blinds in the winter/summer--changing to flourescent bulbs, how to best set the A/C (we never touch ours and leave it at 74 degrees), etc.

Edit: Oh, and we had a friend that does window tinting come out and tint our windows which was an amazing difference! You can see out just fine, as if there were no tint, but from the outside you can't see in unless you're w/in 5 ft. or so. But, it really did wonders for keeping the energy bill down;)

He had a lot of great tips---if you've got 15 minutes, call your energy company and schedule a freebie:)

I am putting some awnings on the windows on the side of the house that gets the most sun hopefully that will help some

74 degrees sounds awfully cool to leave it set permanently. There was a thread in the last 4-5 months where Brains (who is an A/C guy in hot San Antonio, Tx) was talking about what is best from an energy conservation and comfort point of view. Of course, since search is broken right now, I can't find it...

Not bragging, but by being careful, my bill in the summer time (in Texas that's anywhere between June and October) usually is $150 or less. In a 2600-sq.ft. house. My rest-of-the-year bill is generally less than $100. Rates are going up, mine too, but this seems to be my best bet. I keep my ductwork in good shape, sealed up all the cracks in my system; I have a programmable thermostat and good ceiling fans.

And the cool shower on a hot night works wonders.

Some A/C's work differently.

First, we live at the beach and it usually stays 10 degrees cooler here anyways.

But, by setting ours at 74 (actually we set it at 80 to keep it at 74 degrees:S. Ours is very old--the only thing left in the house to upgrade--but I've heard it's better to wait until it dies, than to replace a working-fine unit) the temperature will get up to about 78 degrees before the A/C comes on and then it will cool it to 72 degrees before going off--so that the majority of the time the A/C is off and it's around 74 degrees in here, according to the thermostat.

I grew up in a house (in Florida, still live live in Florida) with VERY hot-blooded family---my father kept our huge house at a freezing 60-something degrees:D

I live on the east coast of FL and ours is about $170/month. I'm not sure about the square footage of living space, but it's more than 1,600.

And that's with three loads of laundry/week and a dishwasher once/week running:P Sometimes I have to run the dryer more than that b/c my cat likes to play in his water and soak his rug:S:D

I can tell you though, when we bought the place it was in mig-August and our first couple bills were $250!!!

Since we've put the tinting on (which is the only major change) it's never been above $180/month.:)

Try portico instead. That way you still get some sunlight. I love natural light. Fake light makes me crazy.:D At night I enjoy very dimly lit establishments, including our home. During the day, our place is so bright between the windows (which I like all the blinds open, and my orchids need the light, too) and the skylights. But, after sunset, I just can't stand to turn on some bright light:S It's strange.

I was thinking of a more beefy unit that blows colder and thus runs less. The 1.5-ton units they built this complex with just don't do the job and thus rarely shut off.

Doesn't happen like that. It won't do anything about the fact that there's heat transfer through the walls. So the thing turns on, runs for 5 minutes and gets the temp down to 72. Then 10 minutes later it's 80 again and the thing runs for 5 minutes and gets you down to 72. All the while this is happening you're not getting any dehumidification and 72 starts feeling like a sticky 85. It's better to have the AC slightly undersized. People feel humidity more than they do temperature.

What you CAN do is:

1. Get a programmable thermostat.

2. Buy an AC unit that has an option to run at at lower speed. That way you're getting more moisture out of the air when you've set the thermostat to a higher temperature. (NEVER leave the AC in the "fan on" position.)

3. Put more insulation in the walls/roof. (Pay attention to where the vapor barrier is. In moist lattitudes it should be on the outside; dry lattitude, on the inside.)

4. Plant a tree to provide more shade.

5. Find a more reflective roofing material.

6. Keep researching, I need to get back to work. My occupation being a mechanical engineer in the field of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.

Brains installed our AC for us in our new house :)We have one of those fancy programmable thermostats too, and it is awesome. Our electric bill never goes above $160/month and thats in a 2600 sqft house. Which is funny because in our old junky duplex it was the same price and it was about 650 sqft! :S
He even gave me a private lesson on how to use the thermostat :P
