I know I'm not supposed to think this is funny...

Recommended Posts

I see what you are saying, I have yet to really say much on my thoughts of the parents because it is not known if they were aware that the drugs were there and they did bring him to the E.R. my point is that people actually find this funny that a kid overdosed , might could have died, gets placed in foster care and the money that tax payers will now have to cover for the parents defense or care while they are in jail. Thats where my for shame was placed. I dont find the article funny, I find it sad.

I see your point, she did remove the child from the party and then get medical attention asap and the drugs were disgused as normal candies on a table. It's not quite the mothers fault.

I think Lisa is just upset because the reference was made that in some way it was funny and as a parent it gets her going.

It could be viewed as comedic in a spoof type movie but in real life it's not all that funny.

The effects of LSD is very different from person to person.

While in most cases the drug itself is basically harmless, there are some situations that can occure while under the influance of this drug.

From first hand experiance:
Forgetting to breath.
Not rembering to look both ways before crossing the street.

Now I am not saying that this kid won't be fucked up, because honestly I didn't know an three year olds who had taken this drug. Most people I knew who used this substance was from their teen years and up. For the most part most of the people I know who have used this substance have suffered no negative long term effects.

I think that someone made the point to ask if the owner of the drugs was arested. He should be just based on the posession alone. Also did the parents really know that this was going to be at this friends place. I don't know. But it seems so if the athorities are being so quick to keep the child from it's family.

I found it both funny and quite possibly tragic. I'm a complex guy.

Its not complex Walt... there is nothing funny about a childs life possibly ending due to negligence or ignorance. That does not mean the parents should permentaly lose the child but I find no humor in this situation. To each their own on what they find funny, but I am expressing an opinion.

They learned the hard way, the harder way was if they were planning the childs funeral because his actions werent controllable and he did something unsafe or the dose was enough to be lethal. There is nothing complex about this issue. Its one thing to laugh at turds and whatever but the issues of kids and their lives just doesnt seem funny to me.

Like Thomas said, I am a mom and thats about the extent of my opinion and my feelings on the situation. What happened to putting acid on stamps why make it candy ... jeesh stupid people...:|

When's the last time you heard of parents loosing their kid and going to jail when the chile acidentalyu got into the asprin, or drano, both which are easily more likely to be fatal in the event of an overdose.

I think that scenario could easily happen in Texas--particularly if it is a gun instead of a toxic substance.

Walt said that *he* is a complex person, not the situation. :|

Personally, I understand Walt's perspective and it's similar to mine. Some things are just so fucked up that you have to laugh. That doesn't mean that we are laughing at the child, nor does it mean that we are lacking empathy or sympathy for the child and it's parents. It simply means that people handle situations differently and perspective is everything.

Some people find humor where others cannot see it. It doesn't make either person right or wrong, it simply makes them different.

Very well put, Soulshine!

I'm a mom too, and really don't think it's funny, but I know not everyone thinks like me. When my dad died, my sis cried maybe once, and then spent the majority of the time making fun of stuff and cracking jokes. It was just her way of handling things...a coping mechanism if you will. I know that was a different scenario than this one, but I would have been worried about her had she NOT acted the way she did.

that does not negate the possibilty that a well adjusted, complex "guy" would not find humor in any part of this situation.

o.k. now it gets fun, here is what someone posted in your defense:

Life Lesson #1:

When surrounded by tragedy if you want to hang on to what little sanity you may have, learn to find the humor in it.

Here's a *perfect* example from an earlier post in this thread:

"That'll teach the little fucker not to steal other peoples candy."

Where did you see *any* mention of a near death besides in your own posts? Do you know something about the situation that was not reported? Please share!

No where in this story or this thread has it been mentioned that the kid almost died. Mind fucked maybe, dead no.

C'mon Lisa you are getting emotional again and letting the little shit bother you. SIUCC

There is a big difference between finding humor in a concept and laughing AT someone. As far as has been discussed in this thread, no one here actually knows the people involved, so there is no personal derision whatsoever.

This is very much akin to television programs that show home videos of people getting hurt (football in the groin, running into a sliding glass door, and often worse). And we laugh at it. Why? Because we don't know the people involved. There is just something about situations like this that people can find humor in, provided they are not connected to it on a personal level.

Nobody thus far has denied this is a tragedy. Nobody has laughed AT anyone. The humor is purely conceptual on a visceral level.

***and what did we learn from this thread, Walt?

I know I'm not Walt, but I'll respond anyway.

Two things we can learn:

Avoid taking your children to events that aren't age appropriate, and provide adequate supervision no matter where you take them.

Also, having expectations that everyone see things like we do is futile and extremely unrealistic.

A football in the groin is funny even if I know the person ... Its actually funnier when I know them and it happens in front of me.

Walt its not dramatic to have an opinion on a childs life and no they didnt say he almost died but 9 hits of acid and the possibilites of what could have happened to me his life was on the line. Having emotions for a child known or unknown to me is who I am if people dont accept it then dont read it. I choose to argue the point that I dont find it funny in any way shape or form.

Walt even points out in the title that he knows he isnt supposed to think it is funny, which means he knows what he is saying will not be accepted by some people... Im some people.
