According to Freud, the human is fueled by the desire to make sexual contact with another human being, usually one of the opposite sex, for the instinctual reason to pro-create. Humans go through sexual phases, one of which is the oedipus phase. There are numerous times when he refers to the displeasure of having any female companions at all. He prefers to be in the company of men, and is worried that a woman's presence will disturb this. Likewise, Lena's interest in Herman is also nonexistent. She also prefers the company of her girl friends. It can also be noted that when Herman and Lena are engaged, their same sex friends tease them about getting married, perhaps showing that they recognize that the neither of the two are marriage material. Perhaps we can make the assumption that Lena is a lesbian, Herman is a homosexual, or both. Maybe the reason that Lena and Herman fail to gain self-knowledge is because there is no place in their society for homosexuals. Because Gertrude Stein herself was a lesbian this doesn't seem like too far fetched of an idea. In fact, Gentle Lena could very easily be interpreted as a commentary on homosexuals and their lack of a place in society during Stein's time. While Freud acknowledges these stages, he also recognizes that that is all they are: stages. Both male and female will grow out of it. Herman seems to grow out of it, as he recognizes how extreme his mother is on Lena. Later he has grown out of it, and takes interest in the raising of his children. However, Freud also accounts homosexuality to the inhibition of development, or the stifling of growing through these stages. So, perhaps Freud would attribute Lena's homosexuality to her aunt, who stifled her growth not only as a human being, but as a heterosexual female.
