karenmeal 0 #1 June 24, 2006 I know some of you out there must be into gardening. We just moved into a new place that has great light and a beautiful spot for my new vegetable/herb/flower garden. I'm so proud of it! But I'm also really worried about bugs and slugs destroying it. Any of you folks have some wisdom? I would like to stay away from too many chemicals and would love to hear some organic gardening methods that have been effective. Any advice you have to give me about gardening that you may have learned the hard way would be much appreciated! And because I know that someone will ask, I'm not growing any pot. So I don't really need advice on that. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham

karenmeal 0 #3 June 24, 2006 Have you gotten good stuff off of there? I know I can google some advice, but I'd rather hear from some folks on here about what has worked from them. soulshine 0 #5 June 24, 2006 Yeah, when I used to have a garden I referred to that site frequently. You have to scan through for the tips that are pertinent to the type of gardening that you are doing because it's not organized that well. Overall though I was happy with the tips that I used. slug 1 #7 June 24, 2006 Hi KM We live in the PNW and use plastic pop bottles with a little beer in them to attract and kill the slugs. Trust me it works Our neighbor's use the labor intensive method and go slug hunting thru their flower beds and garden early in the morning, and use std non toxic, cost effective methods to kill the destructive parasites and still keep it interesting. BB gun Compression (shoe or shoeless, rocks) Salt fire decapatation (shovel, hoe, snippers) After the neighbors morning workout they log the # of slugs that have been "relocated", for bragging rights. Good luck R.I.P.
karenmeal 0 #8 June 24, 2006 I've been putting the aluminum pie plates out with beer in them.. but the dog always tries to drink the beer! The soda bottles might be better.. they should be easier to hide and it won't look like I've just scattered trash around my garden. lummy 4 #12 June 24, 2006 Snails. ickk I hate the F'ers. Always eating my new plants just as they start I tried the beer in the glass jar method but only had so so results. I've heard copper strips works too. The slug snail bait that is safe for animals works really well tho. And with 3 cats and a dog, it's nice to know they are safe So what are you growing?I promise not to TP Davis under canopy.. The beer trap the wife uses is a plastic pop bottle cut in half with the top half (neck end) inside the bottom half. Then she lays the bottle on it's side with the beer for bait. I guess the theory is the slugs smell the beer crawl inside the wide end of the bottle exit thru the neck into the bottom half, drink the beer and then the slugs can't reach the neck to get back out. The only downside is you got to check the traps and keep adding some inexpensive beer as required. The pet friendly non toxic slug bait is $$$$. R.I.P. karenmeal 0 #15 June 24, 2006 So what are you growing?Quote I thought no one would ever ask! I've got an assortment of peppers and tomatoes, all the necessary herbs, lilies, zinias, marigolds, squash and cucumbers. It's not a very big garden, but it is awfully cute. Rookie120 0 #16 June 24, 2006 QuoteIt's long distance pesticide. I love that! Did you see that episode of the Soprano's when the restaurant owner guy shot that rabbit that was in his garden? I loved that part. Then he ended up cooking the damn thing. Mmmm!If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!
skytash 0 #17 June 24, 2006 Another thing that works for slugs and snails and actually prevents them from attacking things rather than killing them is coffee grounds. When I first moved into my house, there were lots of snails and slugs on my back wall eating my clematis. I pour the coffee grounds onto the top of the wall that they sneak over to eat my plant and since then, hardly any of them sneak over the wall Mind you, I don't know whether it's something that needs to be done really regularly, I haven't been at the house for a month now so they may have come back tashDon't ever save anything for a special occasion. PLFXpert 0 #18 June 24, 2006 I LOVE gardening!I don't use chemicals or anything else. But, I don't have any indoor gardens. I have 8 orchids inside, but that's it--herbs and flowers and exotics are all outside surrounding our place. I LOVE growing peppers, too. We have a lot of lizards and frogs. They tend to eat bugs. In fact, I've never had to spray for anything but ants since I bought my house almost 4 years ago. I credit the abundance of lizards and frogs. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
