I don't mean the bitchy dominant type, just the ones that seem to have there lives somewhat under control, make decent money and seem to be able to take care of themselves?

How about one that may or may not be smarter then you? Does that make you feel threatened?

Inquiring minds want to know :)B|:P

Yes I am bored at work, and wondered.....B|

No. That is really refreshing and nice when you find someone like that..

But the ones that can kick my ass scare me a little.:|

The question is based on a patriarchal bias - that men get to choose who they date and end up with. the assumption that women don't get to be the aggressor in the mating ritual. Old fashioned stereotypes die hard don't they? Especially when they are evolutionaryily (new word) based.

Turn the tables - Girls, are you scared of ending up with a less intelligent man than you? (ie. one that might not be as good a provider in meat and animal skins as you might be on your own.......)

If the answer is yes, then maybe you women are 'training' men to increase their odds of successful mating by shooting a bit lower than their own personal standards. Evolution encourages women to improve the race by trying to mate to a higher instead of lower level so her offspring can improve. Evolution encourages men just to reproduce widely to propogate their specific genetics.

So you can blame men for being 'insecure', or you can blame women for stacking the deck that way throughout history.

Or you can say it's a natural tendency of the species that is just pretty hard to eliminate on the general level but for individuals can be done if the male is confident/lucky and the female (something more difficult for me to articulate).

(I like intelligent and strong women - mostly because they are more creative and that results in a better and more "intense" relationship at all levels, particularly physically as they are well capable of tying the physical relationship to the emotional connection - it's not a 'more or less' intelligent kind of thing)

Very thought provoking response! Right on!

Me personally I dont care how smart, though prefer somewhat close, that is not something that I HAVE to have. All I ask for is love, trust and honesty. But as I mentioned before, and have seen repeated here many times, a strong relationship has both people learning from each other. People in general have so much to learn from each other on so many levels.

I would like to see the kinds of responses that would come if the title of this thread was "Ladies, are you afraid of strong, smart men?"

"How about one that may or may not be smarter than you? Does that make you feel threatened?" :|

I think it's absolutely essential that the two must be close on all levels. Intellectual, emotional and physical compatibility is essential or one partner will get bored/frustrated/resentful while the other one gets overwhelmed/confused.

Opposites don't really attract long term (and yes, I do expect a bunch of isolated anecdotal stories attempting to dispute this and thus justify the poster's personal relationship - the counter argument and stats are pretty convincing, though, and I wish the exceptions to the rule all the success and happiness).

I'm not at all scared of smart, strong women - why would I want to date dumb, insecure women?

On a side note though, why is it that a woman with a good job who doesn't need to be in a relationship is 'a strong, independant woman', and a man with a good job who doesn't need to be in a relationship is just 'a man'? Doesn't that imply that the average woman is somehow inferior?:S
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

This whole bringin' home our own bacon thing is a relatively new concept to our society. Men have always done it and been expected to do it. When us little ladies manage it on our own, it's how we explain having the option. "Ohhh, you're one o' them independent types!"

Kind of the counterpart to the new(ish) stay-at-home dad concept.

;)

Although I don't see any problem with the "stay-at-home dad concept" I think that he should be untied occaisionally
