Given where I live it just makes good sense with my terror and her masked man. Ask your veterinarian if a Red Rock Rattlesnake vaccine is the right protection for your dog. skycat 0 #4 June 16, 2006 Also enroll your dog in a snake aversion class. The best medicine for any snake bite is prevention. It's funny cause even little garder snakes will cause your dog to BTFU after this training.Fly it like you stole it!

flyangel2 2 #7 June 16, 2006 QuoteDoes it work for Coral snakes, too?? *** What types of snakes does this vaccine protect against? This rattlesnake vaccine was developed to protect against Western Diamondback Rattlesnake venom. It is most effective against this snake's venom. Venom from many other snakes found throughout the United States is similar to the venom of the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. Because of these similarities, this vaccine also provides protection against the venoms of the Western Rattlesnake (including the Prairie, Great Basin, Northern and Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes), Sidewinder, Timber Rattlesnake, Massasauga and the Copperhead. This vaccine provides partial protection against the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake. This vaccine does not provide protection against the Water Moccasin (Cottonmouth), Mojave Rattlesnake or Coral Snakes. Red Rock Biologics is developing a variety of vaccines to provide the best protection against poisonous snakes for dogs in each part of the country. http://www.redrockbiologics.com/FAQ.html#2 The cost of the vaccine is kind of expensive. bbarnhouse 0 #8 June 16, 2006 QuoteThe cost of the vaccine is kind of expensive Its $30 here when given with other vaccines. Given alone they are $45 I don't think thats very expensive given the cost of snake bite treatment. Thanks for the additional info Mar

Thanks for the additional info Mar $45 x 3 = $135 Heck, I have clients that complain when it only cost $14 to give their dogs a rabie shot that last three years Edit to add: Betsy, I think the price of $45 is for each shot, and boosters need to be given. You can't give the dog all the vaccine at once. Most vets will charge the $45 for each booster shot.May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. Then they decide what they can reasonably do. Me on the otherhand, I spare no expense when it comes to my dogs. My dogs bring me way too much joy to not treat them as family.Spolied rotten and to the core! LOL QuoteBetsy, I think the price of $45 is for each shot, and boosters need to be given. You can't give the dog all the vaccine at once. Most vets will charge the $45 for each booster shot. I would suppose the cost depends on the market. Booster is 3 months after the initial and then once a year. I do realize the boosters cost each time. Still worth it to me. Larger dogs require the initial and 2 boosters. bbarnhouse 0 #11 June 28, 2006 Update: Cost was $25 per animal. A booster is required in 3 weeks and then once every year for my wee ones. It is a small price to pay knowing that I've given my loves a fighting chance. They may never encounter a "rattler" but I take comfort in knowing, I did all that I could to to protect them. Avoidance is surely the best protection, but this "terror" would keep after a snake until she killed it...no matter how many times it may strike. Knowing my aniamal, researching the vaccine, and discussing all aspects with her care provider this was the best protection I could offer my pup. riddler 0 #14 June 28, 2006 Friend of a friend story: ... so this guy was out hiking in the CO mountains with his dog. The dog was one of those full-of-beans dogs that can find trouble inside a cardboard box in the desert at night. Anyway, the dog manages to root out a rattlesnake from the bush. The rattlesnake gets defensive and coils for a strike. The guy saw it coming and didn't want the dog bitten, so he jumps in front of the dog and gets bit by the snake. Then he wanders several miles out of the bush, very dizzy almost passing out several times, to try to find a road, which takes a few hours, then a passerby picks him up ina car and drives him to the hospital. By the time he got there, the doctors said most of the venom has filtered out of his blood, so they have no real treatment for him, because he's too late getting to the hospital. Both man and dog live, hospital bills him $500 for "treatment" and the snake got away.Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

More information can be found here For those times when tongs and Raid...just aren't enough Wow I didn't know there was a vaccine. RePete got bit by a baby rattlesnake a few years back when I was living in Poway. Baby rattlesnakes bites are worst because they do not know how to control the venom. RePete could not even walk down the hill back to our house. I had to carry her. It took +$1000 to get her back to heath and an over night stay at an emergency clinic. The anti-venom was around $800 and had to brought in from some other city. It was it short supply - even for humans. Then I had a couple of people tell me that dogs can 'suffer through' a bite and recover on their own. Dunno if that's true, but the suffering that RePete went through with treatment was bad. Betsy - do you want another miniature? I have one. Needs lots of TLC. .. Make It Happen Parachute History DiveMaker
