skydiver51 0 #3 July 3, 2006 There is alot of good information on the web about PTSD. But you may have a hard time getting people with PTSD to talk about what brought on their disorder.
AggieDave 6 #4 July 3, 2006 Quote There is alot of good information on the web about PTSD. But you may have a hard time getting people with PTSD to talk about what brought on their disorder. I had it after Bonfire in 1999. It took me 4 years and some help to get moved on and past the PTSD. I think I would have recovered MUCH quicker if I had sought help sooner. Some people don't understand what it is about and some people don't understand the events that put people in that situation. Its a real problem and it can effect anyone. It doesn't matter what you do or how much of a "man" you are, it can effect you.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." skydiver51 0 #5 July 3, 2006 Great info Dave. It can affect anyone who experiences a traumatic event.People like me who came back from viet nam had no clue what was wrong with us til about 1980 or 1981. That's about when they started diagnosing it as PTSD. People in N.Y. after 911 went through PTSD. If you think you suffer from it GET help. It will eat you up mentally. climbnjump 0 #6 July 3, 2006 QuoteHas anybody been Dx with pstd and had any exp. with EMDR? PM me if ya want Like most psychotherapies, EMDR is somewhat controversial. You might want to read the following book for background info: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0465043011/qid=1151904312/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/103-0563848-3883020?s=books&v=glance&n=283155 It is somewhat biased as it is written by the person who developed the method. The old phrase, YMMV certainly applies here. Whether or not EMDR can/will help you depends on many factors including the skill of the person you are working with and your mindset (with regard to EMDR as a treatment). Some years ago, I witnessed - and subsequently became involved in - a particularly tragic climbing accident. The affect that that had on my ability to climb was profoundly negative. It was either get help or quit climbing. The upshot is that EMDR did work for me and I'm still climbing.
ryanocerous 0 #7 July 3, 2006 Here is a good source of information about PTSD and how to find help. It isn't something you need to deal with alone, if you can talk to a counselor or anyone who's dealt with it before it could be an immense relief to you. PTSD is caused by how your brain copes with traumatic situations, it doesn't have any reflection on your strength, anyone can be effected by it. feel free to PM me if you'd like. With the help of the VA and....believe it or not....jumping out of airplanes, I was able to recover. If you think you have PTSD you may very well have. bozo Pain is fleeting. Glory lasts forever. skydiver51 0 #9 July 3, 2006 I lost my first wife after 23 yrs of marriage Jim. The whole 23 yrs I didn't know what was wrong with me. I have since remarried and I believe that getting back into jumping while I was single helped alot. The VA has helped keep me going also. Glad to hear your doing jim.
