ACL surgery...local or general?

Recommended Posts

Ok...having reconstruction of my ACL in a week. I get to decide which type of anesthesia I would like. My hubby and I do not agree....do you have any pearls of wisdom?
Edit to add: I am obviously going to talk to my surgeon about this and he and I and my husband are going to make the decision...I guess I am just wondering what others thing they might do in my situation.

The only thing I will say on that is:

If you go with local, make DAMNED sure they can finish the procedure before it wears off!

In '87, I pretty much completely destroyed my shoulder (AC separation grade 3). It took them about 6 hours to put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

Fast forward 4 months - time to get the hardware out (finally)!! Due to delays in scheduling, it was actually a good month PAST time to get the hardware out.

They gave me an axillary block and an IV valium cocktail and started to work. It took them more time to do the procedure than what they'd planned. I felt every second of the last 15 minutes of them pulling the hardware, and ALL the time to close the site.

Local is safer than general...just make sure they load you up as was said before.

I recommend adding demerol to the mix...you will love it.

I prefer general for myself, I have no problems with after effects, and just as soon not be knowing how long it takes, or be aware of what is happening. Wish I could get this at the Dentist for anything more than cleaning for the same reason. On the other hand, general makes my wife sicker than hell for two days afterwards, and that sucks.

I have had my knee done in 2000 and I wasn't given a choice as to what type of anesthesia I could have. I guess that was because my knee was so messed up that they weren't sure how long surgery was going to take. Make sure to ask for a digital block though. It will buy you a few extra hours of no pain afterwards. Basically enough time to get some other pain med's in ya when you get home.

Local or a spinal? I've had a couple of surgeries on my ankles (fixing them then removing the hardware later) and I personally prefer the epidural. I had no issues being "awake" during the surgery because they do load you up pretty well. The one time I had the general, I had a nagging nauseous headache for several days, plus I woke up screaming in pain and disoriented. It seems to me that most anesthesiologists prefer the spinal because they do feel its safer, but the surgeons and nurses would prefer you were completely out because you're easier to work with then.

I hate all forms of surgery so I would go with general. I had local for surgery (wasn't given an option) and could sense the cutting even if I couldn't feel it. I could even hear the sound of the cutting and I thought I was going to have a heart attack. That said, most girl scouts are more manly about surgery than I am so maybe you may be OK with local but my vote is still general.

...you WANT to be awake...trust me...seeing the cool stuff inside and how they mangle during surgery before putting it all back together will be something to remember.
