Read Joel on Software on writing specification documents that are actually read. While I don't think his approach is perfect, it definitely does make things easier.

As to why developers ignore specs? They're often wrong/out of date/unreadable. Besides, it's much more fun to make it up as you go :P.

Oh, if only I were allowed to exercise any creativity. Alas, my client has been BigBlued and they believe... they have drunk the Kool-Aid... we are following RUP. Hell, for that matter, so is my employer.

(reading about the topic would also imply I had any interest in it... but alas, I don't. This... my calling ... not so much the same thing.

Yes, I know, they think being creative is more fun. Doesn't help that we have a language/cultural barrier working, too.

I really must quit my job.:|

Although after a few :D with my skydiving buddies it doesn't seem so awful.:D

At least someone is taking the time to write the stuff down :)
I know your pain, at the last place - the glamous role of Lead S/E was to get yelled at by the customer (be it Nissan, DCX or GM), do scheduling, and write the S/W reqs - the last part being the most painful - but in the end it helped alot, even if the S/Es didn't always follow them - at least we had an idea of what the product was supposed to do :)
You should see the games industry - ever try to documenting the requirements for 'fun? :P
