an_ignorant_boy 0 #1 July 7, 2006 I have never registered a domain name before but I have researched a bit and learned that there are several registrars out there, and several resale venues for parked domains. There is a domain name I want, which is taken. I used the "certified offer service" on networksolutions.com and never received a reply to my offer. So I went one step further and called the number listed on the WHOIS. It was the father of the person who used the site, and he said to call his son. I called the son and he said he would be open for negotiations but was busy and I need to call back in a few days. Here is my question. If the son agrees to hand the domain over for a certain price, how do we actually handle the technical details of the sale/transfer? The only methods I can find are the "aftermarket" resale sites, and I would not want him to put his domain on there, because then it would open him to offers from other bidders (not a good thing for me). I guess if he accepts my offer I can just send ANOTHER certified offer through networksolutions.com, but that will cost me another $19 flat fee and a percentage of the transaction. Just curious if there is any way to handle this transfer privately. I did notice on networksolutions there seems to be an option to "transfer domain from one networksolutions account to another". This seems like it might be what I'm looking for. I guess in the case of a "private sale" though, there needs to be trust between seller and buyer for transfer of funds and doman to both occur.~Jaye Autism Speaks -It's time to listen. JeepDiver 0 #2 July 7, 2006 Why do you need a name already registered? There have been several domain prefix names added to what has been available until recently. If it is a vacant domain name which you wish to acquire, wait until the lease on it expires. I would not pay any monies towards a defunct domain name owned by a third party. I do not fully understand what you are trying to acquire. I have used http://www.terrasite.com/ in the past.
Zipp0 1 #3 July 7, 2006 Maybe use an escrow service? I've registerd lots of domains, but never bought one privately. Maybe call godaddy.com registration services and ask. They are cheaper than network solutions, and I like their domain control panel better. Z -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down. ChrisL 2 #4 July 7, 2006 Just pick another name altogether or pick the same name in a different TLD. ie: domain.org or domain.net instead of domain.com Its not worth the effort to get it from someone and they will probably try to extort an absurd amount of money for it. Fuck em. Let em have it.__ My mighty steed

Fuck em. Let em have it.Not necessarily. There are cases where people need to get rid of an abandoned domain name for $20 or so, to recoup previous year registration costs. I had 15 domain names, but I whittled it back to 10. Just let them go. But some people sell them on the aftermarket at cheap "recoup" prices, rather than high prices. To pay for the cost of holding the names for no reason. It's common for a person to register a name, change their mind about setting up a site, sit on the domain unused, and then just let the name go. At only $8 or so for a domain name, it's easy to spontaneously register a domain name on the spur of moment (i.e. GoDaddy.com) Takes only a few minutes to do, and pretty cheap to turn YourName@hotmail.com into YourName@YourName.com for only $8 per year, it's becoming much more popular since those SuperBowl ads... Zipp0 1 #6 July 7, 2006 Quote Its not worth the effort to get it from someone and they will probably try to extort an absurd amount of money for it. It depends. If it is for a business, and it is exactly what you want, it might certainly be worth paying for. Also, .com is more valuable as a TLD than net or org. -------------------------- Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups, he pushes the Earth down.
Armour666 0 #7 July 8, 2006 you can go through a third party to transfer and asume the domain there are steps the current owner has to do to complete that. As for some others have said what about using a differnt name all together depending on the importance of the name to you. If you do get this and are using for comercial purposes Branding can be very important I would register the most common TDL's of the name you want to protect your name on the net and you can direct all other sited to one main IPSO this one time at band camp.....
