MF42 0 #1 July 7, 2006 My beer poll! So I went into Chipotle's the other day for a burrito. At the cash register they've got a bowl for tips. I wonder what, exactly, would I be tipping for? In this place I find my own table and carry the order there. I get my own drink from the soda fountain. Nobody comes by to ask how the food is or offer to refill my drink. When I'm done, I bus the table. Don't get me wrong, I like the burrito; it just doesn't seem right to me that they're asking for tips in a fast food joint without a nice restaraunt's traditional services. And I've seen these tip bowls appearing in other surprising places too. So what do you think? Am I a stingy SOB? Or am I thinking rightly here? nanook 1 #2 July 7, 2006 Nope, I wouldn't either. My tipping policy is tip only a type of service where you consume or utilize the service first then pay. I never tip at a Starbucks or a Santana's(San diego based only probably). I tip at restaurants, bartenders, of course, and also the Nudies._____________________________ "The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never know if they are genuine" - Abraham Lincoln

ChileRelleno 0 #4 July 7, 2006 I tip for service, good service = good tip, bad = , but there must be some service. I sometimes tip at places like Subway sandwhiches if the employee(s) are very friendly/prompt and provide exceptional service. But, no tip for a simple cashier throwing some thing on a tray. namgrunt 0 #6 July 7, 2006 what REALLY REALLY pisses me off is when a server asks do you want your change back as in hint hint RED LOBSTER does this all the time when it occures i reply yes I want my change back and leave a 10 cent tip I find that question very rude as I will always leave a tip of 15% for good service ..59 YEARS,OVERWEIGHT,BALDIND,X-GRUNT LAST MIL. MF42 0 #7 July 8, 2006 Wow! Maybe I need to get out more; I don't recall a server ever being that blatant about it to me. Yeah, that would be rude. I've never waited tables, but I did deliver pizzas for a while, and I would never directly ask to keep the change. 'Course, the repeat customers who were known to be good tippers always got their pizza delivered first, and the known non-tippers were last on the list. Mayberry 0 #8 July 8, 2006 Quote what REALLY REALLY pisses me off is when a server asks do you want your change back as in hint hint Same here!! We went to a Ruby Tuesday's last week & I heard every server there ask that question to the people who paid cash. Didn't matter what the bill was or how much the customer gave them. That's just rude in my book. Don Here's to friends!
downwardspiral 0 #9 July 8, 2006 I think thats a bit harsh to leave a crappy tip just because they pose a question you perceive as rude. It is said that you can tell a person by the way they treat the service staff.www.FourWheelerHB.com

countzero 7 #11 July 8, 2006 if a server brings my food to me, keeps my drink full and takes the plates away at the end, i tip according to the service. i also tip bartenders and pool hall/ night club servers. if that isn't the case i consider it fast food and don't tip. what's next, a tip jar by the drive up window?diamonds are a dawgs best friend

Jaden 0 #14 July 8, 2006 Personally... I always tip. I can usually spare a few bucks & I know what being flat broke is all about. It really sucks. As long as I'm eating, I have no problem tipping.
FlyingJ 0 #15 July 8, 2006 It depends. I always tip pretty well in a typical server situation, and sometimes I'll tip in less conventional settings. Even if my only contact is a cashier, if they are upbeat and actually seem to be happy to have me there as a guest and not just going through the steps I might go ahead and tip if I have an extra buck. I would never tip just because there is a jar there though, there has to be a reason.Killing threads since 2004.
Andy_Copland 0 #16 July 8, 2006 So let me get this straight....in America you tip for people serving you food? Is it only food you tip for or what? Is it a written law?! I was under the impression that people worked hard for an education to earn money for themselves. If you screw up and end up in a shit job you expect someone to bail you out with tips?! Nightingale 0 #18 July 8, 2006 I tip at the local starbucks, and the restaurant that I get take-out from twice a week. The people at starbucks know me and will start making my drink when I walk in, so it's ready for me by the time I get to the cash register, which is really nice. I always order the same thing, and because they try to have it ready for me early, I'll usually try to tip them a buck or so. I'll tip the people at Papa Hassan's restaurant (lebanese food...yum!) two bucks when I pick up my order (a little more than 10%), because I eat there all the time. They're a sit down restaurant with a take-out window and some chairs next to the window. They'll give me my drink when I order, and while I'm waiting, they'll come outside and ask if I want more iced tea while they're cooking my food. I've never seen them do that for someone else, but most of their customers are students from the university across the street, and students usually aren't good tippers and don't tip for take-out at all. So, I guess that I tip at places where I'm a regular and and get great service. I don't usually tip at a starbucks that isn't my usual starbucks, or at fast food places. I tip well at a sit down place unless they do something annoying like let my drink stay empty for five or ten minutes when we're the only people in the restaurant. Im finding this hard to believe... The tipping custom ensures better service, that people aren't just going through the motions. Yes, people work hard to get an education to beccome good at what they do to earn money. Being a food server is not an easy job, and it can be difficult to do it well, especially on a busy night. The servers are only paid a couple bucks an hour, below minimum wage, because here it is our custom to reward people for doing a good job for food service. They work hard and do well, they make more money. It's a very capitalistic way of doing things.
MF42 0 #21 July 8, 2006 In my mind the tip is related to how much time the server/driver/porter/employee/etc. has to put up with me. Somebody behind the fast food counter takes my order, slaps it together, and takes my money as quickly and efficiently as possible, and I don't have any need to speak with them again. A server in a nice restaurant actually spends a little time with me, forms a brief working relationship in order to get the meal and complete the transaction. Much more tip-worthy. Edited for spelling. Matt
Andy_Copland 0 #22 July 8, 2006 That all sounds very well and good in writting but i dont buy it (i worked in a chip shop at 15 so i know they work hard). I done my job just fine and even enjoyed the drunks coming in wanting fish and chips and having a laugh with them. If your doing a job your paid to do it well in my opinion or not do it at all Why stop at people that serve you food 1338 People aint made of nothin' but water and shit. Lindercles 0 #23 July 8, 2006 QuoteThe tipping custom ensures better service, that people aren't just going through the motions. It used to. Now tipping ensures normal service. Tipping *more* ensures better service, and not tipping ensures piss in your food. It's an inflationary cycle. QuoteThe servers are only paid a couple bucks an hour, below minimum wage, because here it is our custom to reward people for doing a good job for food service. But this thread is about fast food, not waiters/waitresses. Fast food workers don't get paid below minimum wage. Doesn't happen very often, so it always catches me by surprise. I usually suggest he give the tip to the line service guys as their job is actually more physically difficult and they aren't paid as well.
