Italy played a beautiful game against Ghana, and now this. Even given a (questionable) 10 on 9, they couldn't do sh.t in the second half. Pirlo and Zambrotta were the only Italians awake during the second half. What a joke. They'll need a lot of luck against Czech Republic next week if they play the same way... I can imagine Americans that already dislike soccer who gave the game a chance today are even more turned off now...god, what an awful game. (Take out the other two, and we go through.) Give me a slot in the Round of 16, and I can forget about the Italians' bullsh*t fouls and Opera dives. I mean, that's how they play, right? Every time some one was touched they fell down and acted like they broke a femur. That will be the last soccer game I watch for a long time. So McBride took a haymaker elvow to his face, was a bloody mess, and managed to get off the field under his own power to take three stitches at the sideline. Exhibit "A" of American ethos. No less than 4 Italian players were carted off the field on a stretcher. Exhibit "A" of footballer ethos. I watched the game from a bar in Seal Beach, CA. The bar was PACKED with people watching the game, which was nice to see. Most of the people made comments that indicated that they didn't really understand the sport, which was still okay, because they at least showed interest. The ref was a JOKE. The red card on the Italian was justified. I'd even say that the second yellow (and accompanying red card) on Pope was justified. But on Mastroeni? Come on. As half of the bar acted like they were carding a player after every slight contact, I noticed how much a ref giving a card resembles a "seig heil." And that seemed appropriate. swedishcelt 0 #182 June 18, 2006 I have been looking forward to the Brazil VS Australia game on pure reason of eye candy. Both teams have hottie players and excess of cute bums. Oh and I am glad that Brazil and Australia have started 2nd half w/ a lot more gusto. It's becoming a decent game to watch afterall!

Australia/Brazil?! Holy sh*t! I'm setting out my chips and dip NOW! Italians play that way when they're uninspired, like yesterday. On good days, they play fairly, creatively, and they win -- like vs. Ghana. Unfortunately the 'dive' was invented in Serie A (Italian league), so Italians have the stigma of being divers -- so much so that when Totti was tackled from behind in the penalty box in 2002 vs. Korea and fell (not faking), the ref responded with a (bogus) red card. If you watched Italy in 1982, 1990, 1994, Euro 2000...you'd see that Italy does in fact play some of the best football there is; they have not played like that since "ever," as you said. Regarding getting carried off on the stretcher -- yeah it looks a bit pansy but they're taken off on them for the sake of not potentially aggravating an injury by walking on it; it's a precautionary measure. In the instances yesterday when Italian players were carried off they got nailed hard, and I know at least two of them were collisions with their own teammates, so it's not like they were faking anything for the sake of drawing cards. As far as yesterday's 'theatrics' -- USA was tackling from behind *tons* until Eddie Pope got his second yellow, then the USA cleaned up their act. Given, many times Italy was "falling easy" from those tackles but I didn't really see one "opera dive." Nonetheless, Italy still played for shite. Hopefully they'll get it together against Czech Republic -- they'll have to. One good outcome of yesterday's game at least is that all kinds of American fans will be rooting for Italia in their next game edited to add: Way to to Korea!! What their team lacks in skill they make up for in heart...nice outcome, without any help from the referees great game! misaltas 0 #184 June 18, 2006 Soccer newb here... I've got a question about "stoppage" time. Who determines how much time is added at the end of the halves, and how do they do it? I mean, I get that some of it is to cover for injuries, but does it also cover other stoppages too like fouls, out of bounds, etc.? Just from watching the games, it seems fairly arbitrary how much is added and then when exactly the ref actually ends the half/game.Ohne Liebe sind wir nichts

I don't watch much footy so I'm not clear on who decides the amount of stoppage time, but it is pretty arbitrary when the game actually stops. Personally I think the new system used in Rugby is much better - whenever play stops for an injury or for the ref to have long chats with, uh, 'over zealous' players the clock is stopped. That way when the clock reaches 40/80 minutes, next time the ball goes out of play it's all over - no messing about, no wondering when the f**k the whistles going to go.Do you want to have an ideagasm? PLFKING 4 #186 June 19, 2006 QuoteI've got a question about "stoppage" time. The ref on the field determines all stoppage time.....his watch is the official game clock. He adds time as he deems necessary; for injuries mostly, but other reasons can add time too. I have a question also.......is there no longer an indirect free kick ? I played soccer in high school and college, but that was 20 years ago....I don't think I've heard an indirect free kick referenced in years.
