bob.dino 1 #451 July 6, 2006 Because it's a trophy . The "World Cup" is the name of the tournament, not the bauble you get to mind for four years for winning it . Anyway, IIRC the original was a cup, was awarded to Brazil for winning the tournament three times, and was stolen.

masterblaster72 0 #453 July 6, 2006 QuoteYawnnnnnnnnnnnn!!! I wish practice would stop, and World Cup would finally start. Who are the next sparring partners again? The ones on Sunday? Italy hasn't beaten France in 28 years...they beat us in 98 and 2000 (crushing defeats). Zidane is amazing, we currently don't have a player like that who will go down in history with Pele, Beckenbauer and Maradona. Your players play in the best leagues in Europe, ours only play in Serie A in Italy. On top of that, ours are younger and less experienced. And some of the top players on your team play or played in Serie A and know our strengths and weaknesses very well. 98 and especially 2000 still burn with fans of the Azzurri, and I'm sure those defeats still burn with our players. For that reason, I don't think this will be an easy match for either side. I am expecting a *very* defensive, low-risk game. As much as I love my team, I am not expecting them to win against yours. I honestly don't think we match up in experience and fall just short in talent. If we can pull it off, wonderful. But I just don't see it happening against a team that made Brazil look like fools for a full 90 minutes. That was, in my opinion, the most dominating and skilled performance I've seen in this cup. My jaw was hanging open at the end of that game. I'd like to be polite and wish your team luck, but honestly I don't want them to have any luck, nor do I think they need it. May the best team win Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

I think the Italians earned the victory - and every victory they've had so far. The Italian defense is phenomenal - and so is the goalie. Quotethen you simply have a problem with the Italian team. I DO have a problem with their feigned theatrics. I've repeated that over again. I'll put it this way - I've got problems with the way my wife acts sometimes. It doesn't mean I don't respect her or credit her for what she does well. It also doesn't mean that I am a "hater" because I point out stuff that is pretty irritating. In fact, I'll point out things that other people do that is poor sportsmanship and unfair. It doesn't make me a "hater." Apparently, there are a billion or so people that agree with me about the Italian diving. I don't cue off of them, nor do they cue off of me. QuoteAnd I like how you conveniently ignored my point TWICE about Mr. Neill's elbow to Grosso's leg in the PK box vs. AU in our previous discussions and ignored my point about Ballack's very obvious dive yesterday. Neill's elbow was down when he made the slide. He didn't stick the elbow out to trip Grosso. I think it should have been an indirect free kick. I have explained my reasoning. You disagree. That's fine. And about Ballack's dive. Yes, it happened. It's not like Ballack doesn't have a reputation for diving. Was Ballack the German player who lost the ball on attack near the Italian goal and dived at the sideline to try to draw a penalty? If so, then yes, he dived. If not, then I recognized another dive - which was not called. QuoteSeems you only have an eye for Italians doing dives. No, I catch a bunch of them I'll probably catch half of them while I'm watching - from everyone. The sheer number occurring from the Italian side makes it easier to point out. Quote*Everybody dives.* Yep. And even winners of the Lady Byng trophy in hockey get penalized. It doesn't mean that Paul Kariya doesn't commit penalties. Heck, Kariya has been accused of diving and has been called for it. You do, however, keep your eyes on Sean Avery. You'll keep your eyes on Steve Ott or brendan morrow. As a team, you aren't particularly watchful of San Jose or Carolina, but you will keep and eye on Pittsburgh and Nashville because they've established a reputation for it. Everyone dives. Some more than others. I'll rail on those that dive. And I'll rail more on those who dive more than others. Hence, I spend a lot of time railing on Italy. They get the most shit for it because they do it the most in this tournament. Yes, I do enjoy giving shit to divers. They should make my life miserable and stop diving. Then I'll spend more time appreciating so much of what they do so well. And they do a LOT of things exceptionally well. QuoteI feel the hate...and I LOVE IT. Keep the stereotypes coming, hater This I resent. I don't hate the Italians. I hate diving, and they've done a lot of it. "Everybody dives" is true, but it doesn't make it right. Please resist the temptation to call me a "hater" because I state my disdain for the tactic and those who use it most often. My wife is hotter than your wife.
