point_code 0 #1 July 22, 2007 I have a slider on my original Sabre 210 that is 28"X23". PD recommends 31"X26". Can a bigger slider soften my openings?

It may help, but in my humble opinion, the best option is to quit jumping the Sabre. There are much better opening canopies today and the risk of injury from hard openings is not worth it. The Sabre has a long and well documented reputation for hard openings. A quick search of the forums may be helpful."Science, logic and reason will fly you to the moon. Martini 0 #3 July 22, 2007 A larger slider may help but there are no absolutes. On my Sabre-1 120 which opened too hard I changed to a slider which is the same size spanwise and 1 1/2" larger chordwise. It slowed the openings nicely, still fast but not hard. I've been very happy with it. I think you'll find that using PD's reccommendation will help considerably. If you like your Sabre then a slider change is way cheaper than a new canopy. I haven't had a single slammer on mine. I also pack it very carefully.Sometimes you eat the bear..............
punkd 0 #4 July 22, 2007 I also jump an original Sabre. Only time I have gotten slammed by it is when i decided to roll the nose, or mess with the packjob some how. I just flake it and quarter the slider so its nice and big, and don't let it move off the bumpers. That and a nice body position I get good openings.. usually within 45degress on heading as well. I only have about 50 jumps on this canopy so I dont have alot of experience but its what has been working for me. Loading around 1:1. I have also heard adding a 'dome' slider can help fix hard openings as well.

kenneth21441 0 #6 July 22, 2007 As noted a new larger slider will help. Also try rolling the nose a few turns and talk with your local rigger on packing in this area for help. good luck...Kenneth Potter FAA Senior Parachute Rigger Tactical Delivery Instructor (Jeddah, KSA) FFL Gunsmith
point_code 0 #7 July 23, 2007 Pd said it would slow down and soften the openings in theory. In reality they said it seems to be a crapshoot. I've heard some people say it will and others say it may not. Just seemed like a good subject for conversation given the amount of experience here. I guess I was really hoping that a dozen or so Sabre I owners would say that it worked for them and would surely reduce my somewhat regular ass kickings. I dont get mega slammed all that often, the openings are just brisk and considerably more uncomfortable than other canopies I've tried. Other than that, I really like my Sabre and would rather solve my issue instead of replacing it.

point_code 0 #14 July 24, 2007 ok, next question.... Does anyone have a slider 26"X31" that they want to sell?
Martini 0 #15 July 24, 2007 You should also check out the many threads on Sabre packing for slow openings, talk to a rigger, check line trim especially brake line length etc. Inconsistent openings indicate inconsistent packing. The slider is the key, the nose is also important. I happen to like Sabre-1 canopies, I've owned three.Sometimes you eat the bear..............
point_code 0 #16 July 24, 2007 My lines are certainly out of trim. Had them checked at last repack and some of the outside ones are as much as 4 inches shorter than spec. Needless to say, it's headed in for a re-line
Derekbox 0 #17 July 24, 2007 If you contact PD they are normally VERY good about helping out there customers with all issues, including sliders. Before you bankroll a slider, contact them. D

crotalus01 0 #19 July 24, 2007 I jumped an original Sabre 190 with the original slider, until it opened so hard it briefly knocked me out. I got the correct size slider from PD (same size for my 190, 26 x 31) and haven't gotten slammed since. It will still open hard sometimes, just not intolerably hard. edit to add that the slider only cost around $60 if I remember correctly. Bonus is its collapsable. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
