turtlespeed 226 #1 July 10, 2006 We do - Well, one, anyway. It does look like a Big Tick. (Hermit Crab) They are tough bastards too. My step mom tried to roast it - (She turned the grill on that he was hiding in.)[rescued by my dad] Then my DAD tried to drown it - (He filled the bowl that he made for Hermes' new home half way with water - the crab hads to vacate the shell and was spread crab on the sponge that was in there) Then - Round two with the Step Mom - already the poor guy is tired and just wanted to sleep in - so - naturally - she thought he was dead and just chunked him into the garbage compactor. I can just imagine what he was thinking then . . . looking up at these Godlike creatures trying to smite him. And then a large grinding noise as - you guessed it - she turned the compactor ON! So we get up and look - and - there Hermes is looking at me like "WTF DID I DO" So we (My Daughter and I) Rescued the hermit crab and the sponge and took them away from the evil crab haters.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun

MF42 0 #5 July 10, 2006 Hermit crabs can be fun.I always fed them a mix of the crab food from the pet store and a few crumbs of whatever I had for dinner. They're natural scavengers, so they'll eat anything, vegetables, fruit, meat, cheese, wood, shells, other crabs. For this reason it's a good idea to keep any artificial materials - like brightly painted aquarium decorations - out of the tank. Eating plastic or paint can't possibly be good for them. It's also smart to avoid introducing a tiny hermit crab to his gargantuan roommate. They are cannibals. When a crab molts he can appear dead, and many happy crabs are thrown into the garbage by distraught owners. The books all say that crabs burrow into the ground to molt, and they do seem to prefer that, but I've more than once seen a crab just retreat further inside his shell for several days, leaving the disgusting, dead-and-rotted looking old shell hanging outside the front of the shell. It's important not to throw that nasty thing away: the crab will eat most or all of the shell after he molts; it provides vital nutrition for his brand new growing shell. Collecting new shells for the crab to try on is fun. But the crab's fashion taste will rarely match his owner's. They never seemed to like any of the shells that I thought would look great on them, choosing instead to move into the most drab shell possible. Crabs are fun. JohnRich 4 #14 July 10, 2006 QuoteWhat the hell is that thing in the second picture?! Looks like something from a sci-fi movie. That's a rather large horseshoe crab. As big as they are, there isn't any meat worth eating on the underside - they're mostly all shell. Underneath they have about eight legs, all with claws on them, and they do look a lot like that critter from the movie "Aliens". I was surprised I could talk the gals into holding it for a photo - usually they are very "Euuwww!" about such things.
MF42 0 #15 July 10, 2006 Damn. I wouldn't blame them for that one; I'd probably be a little "Euuwww!" myself. Matt

Bolas 5 #17 July 11, 2006 They look so scary. When I was a kid we had a park ranger come in with some animals including horseshoe crabs. He saw we we're freaked out so he said "There's only one way these crabs can attack you." He then grabbed the crab and pretended to stab himself in the leg with its tail. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.
