MikeFB2764 0 #1 July 11, 2006 Looks like I will be headed down to Austin for a couple of days on business. I am not familiar with the area, so I though I would ask those of you from that area what there is to do and see down there. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

MikeFB2764 0 #6 July 11, 2006 I guess just about anything. I wasn't sure if there was anything notable in Austin. For example, in Chicago, you have the downtown area with the Sears Tower, Greek town, China Town, the museum area or the lake front. -Mike
AggieDave 6 #7 July 11, 2006 Well, while you're down that way, there's a couple of Freebirds in the austin area. Check them out.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

sharimcm 0 #12 July 11, 2006 Yeah, don't listen to those damn Aggies! Austin's a great place to be! And, there's really nothing wrong with 6th street if you like clubs and lots of live music. I think you should check out the Congress Street or McNeil Bridge Bat Flights... It's one of the largest bat colonies, and they fly daily right before or at dusk. Other than that... Chuy's is a good TexMex place to eat... When are you going to be down (or up) here? wmw999 2,589 #13 July 11, 2006 I was just in Austin over 4th of July weekend. You can see the largest urban bat colony in the world as they all fly out to get mosquitoes for their babies; the Congress St. bridge at dusk. You can go down 6th street where all the nightclubs are, with a lot of live music and live comedy shows. There is some cool Texas history, and a couple of art museums. You're probably not that interested in the Mexican clothing and textiles show right now... There's Hippy Hollow, the only nude state park (lewd behavior and obvious alcohol consumption not allowed). There's sunset dinner at the Oasis, where people applaud the sun. There's a lot to do in Austin, really. There's a ballet, probably a symphony etc. There are restaurants. There are thousands and thousands of co-eds (although only the summer school ones are around right now -- they're either there because they couldn't pass all their classes, or they're really dedicated to school). And you can go to South Austin if you want rednecks. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. jumpjunkie 0 #16 July 11, 2006 If you like live music, pick up a (free) Austin Chronicle. Inside, towards the back, it lists all the artists playing at each venue for the week. There are plenty of great restaurants, too many to list. And one of my personal favorite things is the Alamo Draft House. Got to love a place where you can eat, have a pitcher of beer, and watch a movie all at the same time. Tubing, so easy a caveman can do it.
Dumpster 0 #17 July 11, 2006 I haven't been to Austin since 1989 - But there is NO way to be bored in that town - Lots of stuff going on some where, day or night, any day of the week. Easy Does It

JAC 0 #21 July 11, 2006 You also might want to head down to the warehouse districe too (4th street) not as many 18 years old there... unless that's your thing.

I think the bat colonies in Cairns, Australia would give them a run for their money. The sky gets black with bats as soon as the sun sets. And they're huge - 3 foot wingspans. AggieDave 6 #25 July 11, 2006 I found Louies 106 to be a pretty good resturant. GT Distributors have a show room in Austin. That's always a cool place to go look around (I tend to spend too much money when I visit, though).--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
