Webcam as a security cam

Is it possible to continuously record from a webcam (USB type) and to review it later? If so, is special software needed?

I have a little Logitech webcam that will work as a security camera/motion detector. I've had it a few years, but works good when I need it. I even used it to make a video of my cat when I was at work for a few days... click the link to enjoy!!!

The motion capture works pretty good. I used to use it to watch my dog when I was at work by setting it up to take stills when it detected motion. Mostly just saw pics of her sleeping on the couch though.

I use a software called geovision (google will give you hundreds of hits) - made by a tiawan company... It is designed for security camera use, although not super robust like a $5,000 system, but $150 for the card and software ain't that bad... Then you can get a real secuity camera...

But I know the USB cams work too...
