Squirrels... Pests or useful?

Recommended Posts

Lots of squirrels live in my community, see them all the time running up trees and buildings, screeching at other squirrels. My cat stalks them, but they're a bit more proficient with vertical escape :D.

Do these little guys serve a useful purpose?

Useful purpose? Yeah, they've improved my shooting skills considerably. An H&K USP 40 S & W, when using a personal protection round, makes a mess of them, tho.

Why would you do that?

Squirrels are useful. They provide food to many animals out there.

On the flip side, Squirrel is pretty tastey. Especially when cooked into a stew.

(No I'm not kidding and yes I've had grilled squirrel, squirrel stew and a few other dishes put together with fresh squirrel meat).

I believe their tails taught us to break dance.

Not much meat on a squirrel, so stew is usually how they're prepared. Tasty enough.

They help plant trees by hiding nuts and forgetting where they hid them.

Other critters eat them.

So fairly useful, I'd say.

they're furry little rats...and i agree with Dave they do serve a useful purpose as a food source to a lot of other animals...

I haven't had them in stew though so I can't make a comment on that... :|

THE ONLY REASON PEO...

oops sorry LM...:|

The only reason people think they're cute is because of the fuzzy tail, they're tree rats.

You can take a squirrel out with a good air rifle. Those are a lot of fun to have (as long as you're responsible with it) and can even hunt small game (squirrels, rabbits, etc) if you're a good shot.

Or you can trap a squirrel then use a hatchet.

As a side note, anyone read the book Hatchet as a kid?
