The company I work for (ambulance) is out of Ridgecrest, about 100 miles away, and Death Valley is part of our response area. I've done standby's for marathon's there, and will be working the one coming up from Mt. Whitney --> Death Valley. Now THATS some crazy shit!!!

Yep, thats definately a beautiful place. I was a little concerned about my girlfriend spontaneously combusting. Myself, it was all part of the adventure:P

They probably do it in February or something.

Nope...July. Unhinged for sure.

Glad to see you made it out alive. They don't call it Death Valley for nothing...

And yes, it's gorgeous scenery. Tough during the summer, horrible during winter, but nice during spring and late fall.

Who would plan a marathon through death valley! You gotta be seriously fit and also mentally unhinged to want to do that!

Yep. And 2 of our best marathon runners (40+ and 50+) do it, too...

They're training a minimum of 4 - 6 hrs a day, over years. Only after that, they are capable to participate in such events. Crossing Sahara, Gobi, running even in the mountains, incredible those guys! :o

I'm sorry....but you must be out of your damn mind....

I really dont understand how running is fun and exciting to some people....even friends of mine who do cross country. Running was always a punishment for me during sports and still is and therefore I DETEST running.....I'll do it to get in shape...but not for too long or just for "fun"
Puttin' some stank on it.

I run only when chased. By a maniac. With a chainsaw.

But I can understand what runners get - the solitude, the self vs. self vs. elements challenge, the "high" when your motion, your body and your mind all kinda sync and elevate you above the actual foot-pounding... not to mention the killer bod...

Sounds nice actually. Too bad I hate it. :D

you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

Actually theres several:P

Worked one called "Enviro-somethingorother" (sorry)that starts and finishes at Furnace Creek. It was about 3 or 4 months ago. Temp was mid-eighties so not too bad.
There are a couple of bicycle races too.

These guys will NOT let anyone start an IV on em, "Sir, Im gonna start an IV so we can get some fluids in ya"---"That will get me disqualified":|

These type of events are often referred to as ultra events. I have to agree about the unhinged part. My brother has been competing in them for years and/or helping as a pacer or a "mule" carrying food/water for other participants. These events often include obstacles like forging across a freezing cold river, thousands of feet of elevation change in the Rocky Mountains, and major temperature swings for morning to mid day. He has yet to do the snow shoe race across the desert sand dunes near Borrego Springs in mid summer. And he thinks I'm crazy (let's all say it at the same time) for jumping out of a perfectly good airplane.

There's another called the Whitney Classic. Lowest to highest in lower 48. It used t start in Death Valley on bicycles to Whitney Portal where they would run up Mt Whitney. The race has changed to exclude the run up Whitney but they still bike up to the Portal. Some competators arrange for back-country passes to do the run.
