MF42 0 #2 July 21, 2006 Don't know, but that head looks kinda triangular to me. I'd keep my distance until somebody who knows what they're talking about identifies the critter. Matt

MF42 0 #5 July 21, 2006 snake pictures Found this site. From the photos, I'm thinking maybe that's a small bull snake. Worth a look, anyway. Matt
Brains 2 #6 July 21, 2006 Either a diamond back water snake or a yellow bellied water snake. That would be my best guess without catching it and studying it further. Plus, look, it is going after your water hose, it must be a water snake. Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.

freelyflyn71 0 #13 July 21, 2006 It appears to be a common water snake. All venomous snakes in North America have slit pupils and exaggerated triangular heads. The only exception that I know of on the slit pupils would be the Coral snake, but the Coral snake is black, gold and red banded. In the pic, the snake in question does not appear venomous, but I've been bitten by a water snake before, and it still hurts like a bitch due to their razor-sharp, hacksaw blade type teeth. They tend to have nasty tempers when you dick around with them. The Braver the Bird...The Fatter the Cat.

When I first saw it a few years ago, I did a bunch of research and decided that it was a Florida Brown Watersnake, but I have never been sure. -- Jason ---- Jason -- Some people never go crazy. You can really see it in the high resolution pictures. And it seemed much less confrontational than in the past. That would make sense if it was just looking for a nice relaxing place to get a peel. -- Jason -- Some people never go crazy. What truly boring lives they must lead. MF42 0 #16 July 21, 2006 I've always imagined a that a skin ready to molt must itch something fierce. Probably a great relief to peel that thing off. Matt
Nightingale 0 #17 July 21, 2006 QuoteThis one has been visiting my property for years, but I have never really known what type of snake it really is. Any ideas? About all I can tell you is: 1. not venomous (round pupil) 2. getting ready to shed, STAY AWAY! even if a snake isn't venomous it's bite can HURT, and shedding puts snakes in a Very Bad Mood. I have a pet corn snake. In the days before she sheds, she gets PMS (Pre-Molting Syndrome). Doesn't wanna eat, doesn't wanna move around much, doesn't wanna be handles. Her skin gets opaque, especially over her eyes for a couple days. Then a day or 2 later, her skin gets clear & sharp-colored again, and THEN a day later, she sheds. After the outer skin layer comes off, she gets very active & hungry again. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
dunesurfer 0 #24 July 21, 2006 QuoteAny ideas on THIS guy? It is a banded water snake. The one posted at the beginning of the thread is also a water snake, probably a banded as well.
