NSEMN8R 0 #1 July 2, 2007 Has anyone here seen a Gemsy 20u? How similar is it to a Singer 20u? http://www.sewingmachinesmart.com/servlet/Detail?no=15 $325 for a new machine with a table and motor seems too good to be true.
councilman24 37 #2 July 2, 2007 I asked the same question a few weeks ago. But ended up with a used Pfaff zigzag. As best I can figure out and have been told by some other people who are probably guessing ALL of the versions of 20u, including singers, comes out of the same factor in china. People have varying degrees of success with them. A friend as one without ANY brand name and a chinese manual. It sews straight pretty well but he's never been able to make the zig zag sew worth a damn. But it's also his first machine. This IS cheap. For light weight stuff and thinking of it as more a home machine might be okay. Or as a very first machine for learning how to sew. But I've spent more time futzing with machines and a trying to make them work (never have purchased a new machine) than actually sewing. If a chinese 20u is what your budget can handle I'd say give it a try. If you can handle more maybe pass. I've bid on a couple of blue (hmmm green.. blue green) japanese versions lately but haven't gotten any of them. I now have my Pfaff running and a Necchi BU which is a light weight commercial type machine I now think of as my 20U.I'm old for my age.
