Was written for Syd Barrett. Syd was the founding member of Pink Floyd but retired a couple years later. He showed up years down the road when Pink Floyd was recording Wish You Were Here. Unexpectly. The song was written for him and he showed up while they were recording the song for him without knowing. They did not recognize him because he shaved his head and eyebrows and had gained a lot of weight.

The guy shaving himself in The Wall is a Tribute to Syd Barrett.

which was specifically written for him.. you got the story right and the song wrong.
