GPS - What's hot and what's not?

Recommended Posts

Considering a portable GPS for street nav and as many other uses I can get out of it. I know we've got a bunch of techno-toy-freaks out there, so what's the best bang for the buck, and what's got the features a jumper would like?

I have a GARMIN Vista (black and white) and it's served me very well. I use it hiking, with my PDA & TomTom for in-car Nav and when Paragliding. It has Great battery life (2 x AA), is small and reliable.

If you want cheap... take a look at the Geko range (also by Garmin).

Depending on how small/big/etc you want... Garmin has very diverse selection of devices...

www.garmin.com

The Current Generation of the Garmin Vista (Cx) is pretty nice since it has a daylight readable color screen, a built in Barometric Alti (not really "useable in skydiving" too big for the wrist as well, could be worn on the hip) but it's still reasonalbly compact... :)
but it also is expandable because you can finally add external memory (has a Micro SD slot)

I am a surveyor and I think both the Garmin and Magellan have great features.

I think there are a few MUSTS

Digital compass that works accuratlely when motionless

Color is damned nice for Driving

an Altimeter to negate the inaccuracy of the elevation given from your 3d fix

MEMORY!!!

Power cable so your batteries don't go dead on a long driving trip

I have a GPS 76S. It's a great for everything. I use it in the car sometimes, but it's great for hiking, geocaching, marine use, everything. I absolutly love it.

If you're looking for portable street navigation the hot one now is the garmin nuvi. about size of a deck of cards touch screen, yada yada...

if you want something cheaper there's the garmin quest and the garmin quest 2. both of these are also waterproof so they can be mounted on a motorcycle or boat. they're small, handheld, will fit in the pocket.

the difference between the quest and the quest 2 is the quest can only hold part of the us. however, i've been told the quest 2 is too slow to use if you're driving around (due to added space without added processing power)

i have the quest 1 and it's great. i can hold all of florida, and when i went to chicago i just switched the data.

if you have any questions let me know. i spent maybe three weeks researching all of the gps types before i got this one.

overall, my recommendation would be:
if you have the money (about $700) and don't need waterproof, get the nuvi.

if you're poor or need waterproof, get the quest.

check ebay also, everything is about 30% off retail there .... (i know its legit as i used to sell this on there but left for various reasons)
