NWFlyer 2 #27 August 7, 2006 Since when are regional accents automatically wrong? I may be reading waaaaay too much into your husband's actions, but it sounds like he feels your way of speaking is somehow something that needs to be corrected. To me, regional accents are one of the things that makes this country and our language (and the variations of it) interesting. I'm (obviously) known on here as a member of the "grammar police" and I believe that, at least with the written word, right and wrong are much more easy to delineate. But with regional accents and dialects it's more of a gray area. I guess I don't think of them as something to "overcome" (although for certain professions a neutral accent is almost a requirement) but as something that gives people character. But then again, I am the child of two parents who both lost their strong regional accents when they moved away from home. How much was deliberate and how much just happened because they were away from their normal influences, I'm not sure. I have what I like to call the "mid-Atlantic non-accent" ... rarely can people pinpoint anything about where I grew up based on how I speak."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
popsjumper 2 #28 August 7, 2006 QuoteWell? I think I'd want you to drop hints, but I REALLY don't want to continue to sound like a moron. Just like a woman....don't tell me, just drop hints. If I don't get it, it's because you gave lousy hints...go sleep on the couch. Sheesh. My reality and yours are quite different. I think we're all Bozos on this bus. Sorry, none of the bezillion cameras we have in the house seemed to be working while I was in the bath. But oddly, they're all fine now. And Kelly: I know better than to do a lot of things, but that rarely keeps me from doing them.

jtval 0 #33 August 7, 2006 I voted Yes,but it would be easier if everyone who knew I pronouced something incorrectly would just shoot themselves on the face. that way I can resume telling everyone that I am always right. My photos My Videos

jtval 0 #35 August 7, 2006 No offence or offense but,in that instance, your husbands sounds like a douche bag.(I would imagine hes not like that with everything, though.) if you used the word scrabble dabble in place of measure and I knew that you did thateverytime I would propbably act like I didnt know what you were tlaking about but just because you PRONOUNCE Measure differently the he, doesnt mean its wrong. My photos My Videos

happythoughts 0 #40 August 7, 2006 The great thing about Georgia girls is that "no" is a 3-syllable word. By the time they get it out, it's too late.

Icon134 0 #42 August 8, 2006 I agree regional accents are perfectly acceptable... I'm actually suprised that the US doesn't have more regional dialects... Japan has several and its a very small island... Actually the english language is generally very flexible when it comes to pronuciation of words. Often even if someone pronounces a word differently it can still be understood. I know the same can't always be said in (for example) Japanese...Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife...
jumpjunkie2004 0 #43 August 8, 2006 Some people think that region accents and dialects are endearing. My husband is not one of those people. When I am with my family, it is very obvious that I've been trained to speak properly. I don't sound much like my siblings. It wasn't all my husband. I spent a summer with my grandmother when I was just a little girl and I came home with a funky intense southern accent. When I entered grade school, my teachers couldn't understand some things that I was saying. Eventually, they fixed me...Jump, Land, Pack, Repeat...
