i just signed up for a mini triathlon

Recommended Posts

what the fuck was i thinking? i'm certainly not in the right shape to do this sort of thing, but i'm determined to be the fattest man to finish the race. for a real athlete it wouldn't be a problem, but it will be tough for me. its only a 1/4 mile swim, 6 mile bike ride, and 2 mile run. i'm not worried about the swim, i'm a fish. the bike ride i take occasionally is just under 6 miles and i do it easily. the run will definately be a bitch, but i figure i can gut it out. any advice from people who do this sort of thing would be appreciated, likely not taken, but appreciated none the less.

Crappy part is daddy and I said we'd do it with her. :| Eegad...!

Swim: You will not be in a pool alone. Lots of other people all around you. Keep your head up and try to avoid getting kicked in the face or having your goggles kicked off you. Breathe smoothly.

Bike: Don't fall off. I preferred to wear some bike shorts with more coverage than the standard triathalon "speedo with a bike pad" shorts on due to rubbing.

Run: When you get off the bike and start to run, your legs are going to feel like they're filled with cement. Relax and run smooth and this will go away. Make sure you get all the sand/dirt/crap off your feet before the run. I don't wear socks on my bike, but I do on the run. I make sure my feet are good before putting my socks and shoes on. Wet, sandy feet inside your running shoes can really suck.

General: If its your first one, don't go all out and spend it on the swim. Make sure you have enough in the tank to get you through the run. I did about five before I knew how much I could put out and still be able to run. If the water is cold on the swim, give your legs a little more time to get warm on the bike so you don't lock them up. Make sure you eat good the day before and really hydrate before, during and after the race. With the transitions and all the hooplah, it will turn into a much longer workout than you would probably normally do.
Have fun! You will see all sorts of people out there. In my first one, I got beat by a guy on a unicycle and a guy rolling a skateboard.

LOL... I didnt say "at the finish line stick you dick in someone's mouth"

but that would at least get you in the newspaper:D

I think thats only customary for first timers. Kind of like "beer rules" for triatheletes.:P

Can you imagine how in shape the male population would be if that was the case?

Not if you're smart!

Do the swim (or tread water behind one of those inflatable course markers) and then exit the water. Get on the bike and ride just slightly out of site. Then get off bike and smoke a couple of cigerettes. When about 1/4 of the group starts back to the staging area for the change, ride over to them and transition for the run. Run off until you're just barely out of site. Go back to the smokes, perhaps some beer is in store too. When about 1/2 of the group makes it back to the line, you trot in with a stone faced out of breathe look and pass the finish line. Remember to take the cigerrette out of your mouth and set your beer down when running towards the finish line from your "run."

Commence with tradition.

Good work, got much sponsorship lined up? The swim and the bike ride don't sound too taxing but the run at the end could be painful;)

That's just reminded me, the Uk event on the Ironman Tri world championship goes right past my house in around a months time. Those crazy bastards swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112 and run 26.2! Having done a lot of cycling in the area and along the route they use I can tell you it is not easy terrain. Its put a nagging thought in the back of my head that I should attempt it one day, but for now I think I'll pass:P

Good luck on your Tri.

at the gym today i did a practice swim/bike/run.

the swim was a breeze since i usually swim 4 to 5 times that far normally. this took about 11 minutes. the real deal will be a little harder since, being in a lake, i won't have a wall to push off of every twenty meters, no little line on the bottom to follow, and as you said, people kicking me in the head.

6 miles on the stationary bike in an air conditioned gym is definately nothing like the real thing. i completed this in around 17 minutes. this is conciderably faster than the loop i normally ride that is shy of 6 miles, although the loop i ride has hills and the race course is flat.

the run was slow. it took me about 26 minutes to go 2 miles on a treadmill. i know that running on a road is much more difficult, but my only goal is to finish, so i'll have no problem walking if i have to.

there are other things to contend with also. i'm betting that the temperature will be in the 90s. the race is at 6:30 at night, so it could even be hotter than that if there's no wind. i also don't have the proper gear. i'm not going to wear a speedo. i'll be making the swim in my swim trunks. when i get out of the water, i'll just drop my swim shorts and put on my running shorts and running shoes and ride the bike wearing that. (don't worry, i'll wear underarmor underwear the wholw time) this will shorten the transition from bike to run, but i don't think it will matter.

Unless you're a good kick turner, not havig to reverse directions may prove faster.

you may be right, i'm shitty at kick-turns so i don't do them. on the other hand you give your arms a little break as you glide away from the wall.

there is the little break to the arms, but effort is spent on that push off. I like open water better, thou early on the pool I had to use was only 40ft long.

Do one or two OW training swims and the adjustment for raceday won't be that bad. (shit, you jump out of planes, an errant kick in the face is nothing in comparison)

Have a good one

unfortunately i won't have the opportunity to get to open water between now and then. the race is next thursday. also the forecast for the next several days calls for temps over 100. due to child care issues, i can't get out to run or bike until the later in the day. i'll just have to do all of my training inside. my only goal is to finish, so its really not a big deal.

last night i finished it in around 1:05. the worst part was definatly the swim. i spent the first third of it fighting to find a clear spot to swim. being constantly kicked in the head and nuts forced me to expend tons more energy than i expected. by the time i got into relatively clear water, i was short of breath and no matter how slow i went, couldn't slow my breathing down. i still finished the swim in 10 minutes, which was my goal, but i could have easily done it in under eight if i didn't have to fight the crowd. it took me three minutes to transfer to the bike. for some reason, tying my shoes was giving me trouble. the bike portion was a breeze, however i have a full suspention mountain bike which isn't ideal for a road coarse. the transition to run was easy, but the run kinda sucked. i plodded along putting one foot not very far in front of the other. i'm sure a fast walker could have passed me, but i had decided that i was going to keep running no matter how slow. my legs felt like my body weighed 500 lbs. i was hoping maybe this would go away, and it did. unfortunatly not until about 300 yards from the finish line. i crossed the finish line with a smile and didn't collapse in a heap like i thought may happen. there was only one person from my group to finish after me and he easily weighed 350lbs. he had passed me during the bike ride and then i passed him with a mile left of the run. it was fun and i plan to do it again. now that i know what to expect, i should be able to do it faster next time.

Hey congrats!!!! B|B|B|

Reading your post has brought up that tri over here next September again...and my out of shape a$$ can't make it up the flight of stairs in our house without pausing for a latte' break. :S:P:ph34r:

But a promise is a promise...and my little daughter does not forget promises. I hope I can keep up with her and do as well as you did. :)

Sorry I saw this thread late - I use to do about one triathlon/week (sprint distance that is) before I started skydiving - they are so much fun!!

A few pointers, when swimming most triathletes leave their legs pretty still, using them as rudders rather than as power, save those muscles for when they're needed - biking & running. Also, to catch my breath I would swim breast stroke.

Then i took the time to change socks between the bike & the run. Let all the sand/water soak into the biking socks then use the cleaner outside to wipe down before changing into clean fresh running socks.

get the clip-in peddles & PRACTICE!! They will help so much!

For the women, I wore a sports bra under my racing swimsuit. Then pulled on triathlon shorts - they have a SMALL amount of padding for the bike portion & they dry really FAST so they don't chafe druing the run. And since I'm self consious I'd grab a regular tank top & pull it on during the exit to the run - not taking extra time to stop & actually change.

Get biking shoes w/ velcro & get fast laces for your run portion.

having a towel @ your station is always handy as can be a small bucket of water. also tuck a goo pack or some other small energy thingie in with your water bottle on you bike, take it just after the half way point on the bike - that way it won't enterfear with your stomach on the run & will already be kicking in when you really need it.

get the aero bars on your bike (and again - practice).

i'm sure there are others but since I'm from this area there's www.chicagoaa.com

spend the $ on a good set of shorts, you won't miss the pain the wrong pair can cause.

For training for the run, if you must be on a treadmill, put the incline @ a 2.0. Using anything less than 1.5 is just allowing you to practice swinging you legs back & forth 1.8 is close to the actual force needed for road running, 2.0 allows a bit of extra training w/ out acutal hill work & it'll make a flat road feel like a breeze.

Good luck, I know I'm not the only one on here that did tri's but I love to talk about them. Anyone can send me a PM or post for any questions/issues/concerns/discussion.

Dang I sure do miss them!

There is no can't. Only lack of knowledge or fear. Only you can fix your fear.
