kelel01 1 #4 August 8, 2006 Are you a sociologist/psychologist/anthropologist? And I would say things like my intellect and such are inherited . . . but most of my behavior is learned from my friends. I'm nothing like my parents or sister.
Lindercles 0 #5 August 8, 2006 When I was younger I would have said that I'm nothing at all like my family, and in truth I'm pretty much the black sheep. But the older I get and, ironically, the longer I've lived away from my family, the more I'm starting to see a lot of them in me.
sioux 0 #6 August 8, 2006 No, not really. I'm just curious. I sometimes wonder how things would be today if things were different yesterday. sioux 0 #7 August 8, 2006 Yeah, me too! I'm starting to say things like "Oh, God, I'm becoming my mother" ... and I'm starting to be really proud of that.... livendive 8 #9 August 8, 2006 Looking on my past and trying to be honest with myself about who I think I am today, I have to go with mostly nature. While my family has had a substantial influence in my life, I think that if our developmental environment was the primary factor, I would be a very different person. Rebecca 0 #12 August 8, 2006 Both - my parents set out to nurture my true nature. Mom was always very mindful about exposing us to as many learning opportunities and experiences as were available, but she never forced anything, just let us decide our interests... That said, of course I learned things by watching, smoking for example, that they never wanted us to pick up. That's how they picked it up in the first place - by watching their parents. Good news is: that particular cycle is broken. you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

I don't understand this. Can you please clarify? I got a new house and a new mom & dad at the age of 13. While I do have some habits & beliefs that I think are attributable to my family, the person I perceive myself as today doesn't correlate at all with the first 13 years of my life, and only somewhat with my family life from age 13-18 (when I moved out on my own). sioux 0 #16 August 8, 2006 Aaah, ok. Thanks for the clarification. Within the "nurture" department, you must have some interesting input. I think 13 is an important time... drae 0 #17 August 8, 2006 I think nature plays a tremendous role. I never would have believed that a few years ago. My oldest son never spent time with his birth father yet he has his mannerisms, talents, and so very much of his basic personality is like his father's it is amazing. They even like the same authors and artists. They react to situations the same and I can guess what Evan will do based on my knowledge of his father. Blows me away!! kbordson 8 #19 August 8, 2006 I am VERY different from my two sisters-physically, spiritually and persoanlity. My mom and I were discussing this at lunch today. Trying to understand what makes some people unhappy in life and others more bold and adventure seeking... is it genes or encouragment? I still don't know. I think chrms are WAY COOL but wonder about what might turn this gene sequence off or modify or mutate this other area. .... gonna go watch GATTACCA now.
