SkydiveStMarys 0 #27 August 9, 2006 Velveteen Rabbit...great book. It is still a very close personal favorite of mine. It has a wonderful "meaning" behind it and it still makes me cry. kbordson 8 #33 August 9, 2006 One thing that I would NOT want my child to play with is PSP or whatever new video game is out. It's too easy to use that as a babysitter and then deprive the child of social interaction, discussion and growth. I was adamant about my nephew NOT bringing his PSP on the trip that he and I took to the East Coast. We talked in the car..... Toys/Games that I do want: Skates, Bat and Ball, Bikes, Trikes and Big Wheels (Not an Escalade ) Chalk and paint Playdo Books (lots and lots of books... in fact I already have most of them... here are some, and others) Jumprope (traditional and chinese) Chess, solitaire, cribbage Risk, Trivial Pursuit, Stratego, Battleship, Boggle, Mastermind, Twister, Scrabble Edit.... I forgot LightBite
skymama 37 #34 August 9, 2006 Oh skates! That reminded me of a few weeks ago when I was watching a movie with my son that took place in the early 70's. It showed a boy putting his skates on over his shoes and then tightening them with a key. I told my son I used to have a pair like that. He looked at me like I was crazy. He didn't get the whole key concept and had never seen those before! BillyVance 35 #35 August 9, 2006 QuoteQuoteOh - and rope, too. Don't know if that's the right stuff for kids nowadays, though.I used to climb 25-30 feet up into trees as a kid... seriously who needs toys... You got that right. I didn't need much in the form of entertainment when I had all those trees and a mountainside to climb just a short walk away."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban
JohnMitchell 16 #36 August 9, 2006 B-B guns, definitely. I'm not kidding. Our kids have them, and have been very responsible with them. I think it's a good way to teach firearm safety, rules, and responsibility. Gotta also have baseball gloves, balls and bats. Always great fun in the backyard. mailin 0 #37 August 9, 2006 Lots of books and arts and crafts stuff. No television if we can help it (although I'm guilty of putting on baby einstein DVDs for Ari) - but I'm not opposed to video games as long as they are non violent - they require more thought process than sitting in front of the 'boob tube' and I know for a fact that playing lots of tetris and pacman helped me get out of glasses faster and helped with my hand eye coordination - not to mention my love of game programming JenArianna Frances

AggieDave 6 #39 August 9, 2006 QuotePlaydo My mom has a reciepe for playdo. So if I wanted some I had to help her cook it, then I'd get to play. Actually I think that did me some good. It helped me learn how to read a reciepe, how to measure stuff in the kitchen, how to mix, etc. Its important to know how to cook.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
