Thanatos340 1 #1 August 9, 2006 Reading the Scottty Carbone Thread got me to thinking (Yes, I do that occasionally but try not to do it too often cause it does usually cause a headache) With the true innovators and people that defined our sport starting to age (Not saying you are getting old Scotty but... I was at a boogie a while back and you were in bed before midnight!!) and all these great stories about the truly wild days in skydiving.. Has anyone thought of collecting these stories for a Book?? The statute of limitations has surely started to run out on most so that they could be told in public again!! A few names that immediately come to mind.. Scotty Carbone, Bill Booth, Peanut, Beazy Shaw (Bring extra paper if you collect his stories.. They tend to go on, and on, and on.. But the Beazys story of the first time he met Scotty is a Classic.) The kind of stories that wont quite make the Museum when it is finally done. Anyone out there with any actual writing skill be interested in taking on a project like this?? A coffee table type book, self published would be great. Stories.. Fact or Fiction, Legendary Quotes, Pictures from "Back in the Day".. Songs, Poems All the things like the song like Scotty lead us on Shannon’s memorial Jump that I have never heard in its entirety before... Things like the Herd initiation that Scotty just described. All these things need to be recorded or they will lost forever one day.
AggieDave 6 #2 August 9, 2006 Its not just the famous jumpers that have great stories to share. People like Doc Stewart, Kim Fuller, Dennis Dorris and others have great stories to share as well. I had started thinking about the book thing after reading the "Scary Stories" thread in History. That's still my all time favorite thread.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
skybytch 273 #3 August 9, 2006 There's a great book out there that does just that for the older generation - written by Howard Gregory. I forget the name though.

brierebecca 0 #6 August 9, 2006 Maybe Skydive Radio could do something like Story Corps has done for the US. They have these booths set up, and you just go and tell your stories. Or maybe they could have a show on the old legends. Brie"Ive seen you hump air, hump the floor of the plane, and hump legs. BIGUN 1,486 #8 August 9, 2006 There is currently an email thread going around from a considerable number of "old-timers" discussing this very thing. It's very early in it's infancy and some suggestions have been to expand on www.parachutehistory.com, create a Wikipedia site for contributors, and perhaps the compilation into a book. My suggestion was to ask HH to block off a section in Skydiving History & Trivia for about 20 contributors for compilation purposes and one editor. It could be blocked from all except those contributing for awhile to minimize the noise (HH did that a few years ago for those scrubbing Safety articles for deployment on dz.com). The hardest task is going to be getting an editor and ensuring the contributors are diligent about growing it. These things have a tendancy to make for great email threads, beer light stories and threads in Skydiving History & Trivia, but trying to get a group organized towards compilation instead of just sharing stories into the four winds will be the challenge.Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard. brierebecca 0 #9 August 9, 2006 It's a great idea to do a book or something, but I like the idea of some other form of media too. The best thing about these stories is sometimes not the content. It's the way they're told. Some of these legendary skydivers are also natural storytellers, and I would love to be able to hear the stories from them, in their own words. BIGUN 1,486 #10 August 9, 2006 Agreed. One can read Aesop's fables, but it is best remembered by the storyteler who tells them to you. Sounds like tow books. One of history and one of stories. BillyVance 35 #11 August 9, 2006 Quote I had started thinking about the book thing after reading the "Scary Stories" thread in History. That's still my all time favorite thread. Yep, it's my favorite thread too. Loads of bust-your-guts-laughing-out-loud stories! Best one is probably Bill Booth (I think) telling about the first ever CRW jump, however unintentional it was, involving 2 jumpers under paracommanders. They pass each other and their 30 foot long bridles catch each other and they end up hanging over a power line, their feet dangling 5 feet off the ground, knowing if one of them completes the circuit with the ground, they both would be "crispy critters"...
