It's Tomato Season!

Recommended Posts

Hate to be a buzzkill, but my mom and sister like tomatoes way more than I do. They use tomatoes way more than I like in their cooking (tho BLT's are my favorite). :)
On a funny note, my dog loved eating tomatoes off the plants. We had a tough time growing them one year until she planted some in the middle of the lawn. Healthiest/most tomatoes I've ever seen come from a single plant. :D:D

I also planted some california wonders (bell peppers), thai hot chili peppers, and jalapenos, all of which have plenty of fruit growing on them. Here's my question on the peppers though, how the hell will I know when they're ripe? Seriously!

I'm a nut for habeneros. You can pick them green, or wait until they turn color. At that point, they should offer little resistance when picked.
Here in Fl. you have to keep an eye on them because of the humidity. They will go from ripe to rotten in about three days.

If they're done well, they're really quite tasty.

What exactly are we talking about? Battered/tempura or naked? Deep fried or pan-fried/sauteed? Slices or whole, smaller tomatoes?

What Krisanne said is true...

Classically they would just be Sliced, salted and peppered to taste, coated in Cornmeal and fried in vegetable oil (or bacon grease) (when I've done it I just pan fried them on the stove...)

or if you want to be a bit more creative... salt and pepper to taste, dust with flour, dip in a beaten egg, and again coat with cornmeal before pan frying (in Vegi oil)

its a very common southern dish... B|

Any green tomatoes on the bush, or do ya have to wait till they start to turn orange? No stomach problems to be careful about due to them not being ripe?

you want to wait until they're plump... nearly ripe...

Allrecipes.com has a page about them... http://allrecipes.com/advice/coll/all/articles/77P1.asp

They are especially tasty with the right kind of dip... :)

I like them green and FRIED!

\

Yes.. iv'e heard that they are very good...
though i never did hear of them til the movie of the same title came out...:S:)How about Pickled green tomatoes??? made much like pickled cucumbers, these are unripened fruit,,, soaked in brine and vinegar,, until seasoned. They make a nice addition to most any healthy salad...somewhat liked pickled peppers. Not sure just how to make them, but They are available at my local specialty grocery store, in one quart jars...

I like this recipe because it doesn't include green peppers.

Chunky Gazpacho

8 really ripe tomatoes, chopped
2 cucumbers, peeled and chopped
1 onion, chopped
5 green onions, sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons horseradish
1 tablespoon fresh oregano, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh basil leaves, chopped
¼ cup fresh Italian parsley, chopped
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Juice of 1 lemon
4 cups V8 juice
2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce
1 tablespoon salt
Freshly ground black pepper

Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl and refrigerate 4 hours or overnight. It is best served very cold. Yields about 12 cups.

I'm so on this one. My tomatos are huge and ripe. So is the summer squash. I love to sautee the squash, tomatos, onions, olive oil, garlic and basil. Yum!

Also, this northerner loves Fried Green Tomatos.

V8, can't stand the stuff! If its mixed with vodka, I can choke it down.:):D

No, it's not V8. Didn't you read the "Chunky" part? :S It's more like a cold vegetable stew that you have to eat with a spoon. I imagine putting some Vodka in it couldn't hurt though. :D

Sorry, no unique dishes...

Then quit wasting our time.:ph34r::P

Ok, well at the moment I'm having a whole chopped tomato on top of fresh greens, chopped carrot, sliced onion, freshly grated parmesan, slices of southwestern-spiced grilled chicken and honey mustard dressing.

Not particularly unique, but it sure is yummy. :P
